I know it's an herb in the Parsley family, and is perennial where I live. (Celery, on the other hand, is difficult to grow if memory serves me...) I've heard it tastes a lot like celery, which is one of my favorite flavorings, but when I bought some fresh lovage from an herb market last year, it had this unpleasant (to me) anise undertaste. I cooked with it and finished it, but it didn't taste like celery to me at all. I definitely wouldn't bother growing it... not for my own use, at any rate.
Are there other varieties of lovage which would taste different? I used the leaves and stems, but I've heard the roots are edible too.
