Is there a difference between Red #40 and Red #40 Lake? Do they both come from insects?

Red 40 Lake is Red 40 mixed with Aluminum Hydroxide so as to be non-water soluble. (Yes, I googled!) Didn't see anything about the source of the Red 40 used to make Red 40 Lake, though.

I don't think either of them comes from insects - but they are both VERY bad for you and linked to hyperactivity, allergic reactions and other attention issues. Avoid it!!!

The dye made from insects is Cochineal. As far as I know, any dye with a # is chemically derived.

Thanx for the comments. I created this thread because it's just in so many things. Especially chewing gum. I read that all Wrigley's gum has been vegan for the past few years. Do you know if this is true? I read this when I googled vegan gum, but it just seems too good to be true.

Carmine/cochineal is also known as E120. Just FYI for anyone interested.

It does terrible things to my son. He's 10 and has become an avid label reader.
