So yeah, I'm curious to try this. It just seems really logical. I don't know, like we share 99% of our genes with chimps and other apes and we are evolved from apes so it seems like we should be eating a high fruit and leafy green diet. I could be wrong but from a logical stand point it makes sense. Anyways, I've been raw before but nowhere near this kind. The first time I went raw was a couple of summers ago for about a month or two and I was a newb and failed. I relied so much on processed raw foods. I really bought raw foods from an online shop like once a week. WAY expensive and not healthy. The second time I went raw was last year for a week. After the week was up I ate a LOT of sweet potato fries (premade frozen) and then during the night got super sick and kept throwing up. The last time I went raw was also last year and this was for two weeks. I ate a lot of salads and felt great but I did eat a lot of nuts and stuff too, so my fat was high. I didn't get sick going back to regular vegan though. Even now, I still eat lots of raw foods.

Anyways, I'm ordering the book tomorrow and I'm wondering if anyone (I know Penny does?) eat this way or mostly this way? Is it easy to stick to? And how do I save money because some fruits are expensive and I know bananas are good and cheap, and while I do love them and eat them, I would like more fruits as well haha. I currently have a tangerine obsession.
What benefits have you noticed from eating this way? Thanks all!

Hey, I've been doing an 80/10/10 style diet for just over a year now (check my thread "Inspiring Raw Vegan Transformations. Share Yours!" to see how it affected me.
Bad digestion/bad mood/bad skin/seriously underweight/complete lack of energy. All cured!
Any change in lifestyle takes a little effort at first but eventually becomes second nature. What can I say about 80/10/10? It rocks and I can't see myself ever going back to a life without loads of fruit :-D

On the cost, yes the food can be more expensive than your old foods, but for me it works out about the same in the end. I no longer get chocolate cravings or alcohol cravings and have to go to the shop to get those things 2 days out of every seven. Also I find I buy a lot less material stuff as I'm overall much happier and more satisfied with my life. No need to try and fill the emptiness with stuff anymore (if that makes sense?)
Checkout local shops and markets, they will often have "past it's best" fruit on sale at a reduction. In real terms "past it's best actually means "ripe and ready to eat!" Also see if you can find a wholesaler near to you. Buying in bulk is much cheaper, and you WILL eat it!
I am personally not 100% raw, I often have a salad as my last evening meal with some tomatoes, avocado and a pile of steamed potato. Sometimes I'll use pasteurised fruit juices for a calorie boost. This is partially due to my financial situation and partially due to a lack of choice in fruit available in the colder months here. Nothing wrong with a good backup to get the calories in, as long as you keep the ratios 80/10/10.

I suspect I was like you. Raw food made sense to me in so many ways, but when I tried the high fat, gourmet raw approach, my health and vitality went downhill rapidly. Probably due to being underweight already and simply not getting enough fuel into my body. 80/10/10 has definitely worked well for me. Let us know how it works for you!

Oh yeah, I forgot to say:
In the book, Doug Graham gives a meal plan that adds up to 2000 calories. This is not however a recommendation for caloric intake, but many read it as if it is. It is simply to show how you can meet RDAs using a comparable intake to a SAD diet. Getting enough calories to meet your needs is of key imporatnce. Personally I thrive on 3500 calories a day plus.

I did this for a few months, and I would definitely recommend it! I felt amazing, so energized and inspired, and my health and digestion were the best they've ever been.

I recently have gone back to eating cooked food more frequently, and that's almost entirely due to budget. Even buying bananas, dates, and fruit by the case or from the discount section, my partner and I were spending hundreds of dollars more per month than our budget was allowing. It wasn't financially sustainable (for me). Others have better situations or resources, so it may be more affordable (particularly in Australia or something, not the cold depths of Canada, haha). Also, it has been a bit challenging finding good fruit here in the winter time.

BUT that said, that is just my own personal downfall, it may not be like that for everyone, AND, with summer coming up and having much easier access to an abundance of fruit, I will likely continue on with it. I do eat tons of raw food even if I can't call myself a raw foodist - it's usually fruit for breakfast, huge salads with lunch/dinner meals, etc, and even with my cooked foods I'm trying to stick with the 80/10/10 ratio.

Try it, you'll love it, I was drinking 2-3 smoothies per day and having huge huge salads for dinner, it was so wonderful. Like Richie said, aim for 3000-3500 cals per day though, because 2000 calories of fruit will likely leave you feeling tired and hungry. Not all calories are created equal, you need more fruit in order to be sustained.

I think I will try this for one or two weeks during the summer. I work 60-70 hours a week then but I get every other Sunday off (as well as all Saturdays and every other Friday). Sunday they have the farmers market here so on the day I have off I will go to it and load up on cheap, organic, fruit and veg.

I work in the kitchen of a camp but the only food that I would eat and that is allowable on this diet is bananas and oranges. They're not organic but I'd eat them because you don't eat the skin. We get apples too but they are red delicious (gross lol) and not organic. Our vegetable section sucks too and it's not organic as well and I don't think they'd appreciate me eating a pound of veggies every day.

I eat non organic fruits and veggies, because I can't pay the organic ones. Otherwise anything you eat what is not organic, even whole bread, pastas, rice or potatoes...,or other cooked foods they contain chemicals. I think, is better if I consume all these foods raw than cooked. And I'm not sure that "organic " fruits or veggies are chemical free, because on the fields, the water from rains may pass from not organic fields on the oganic ones. The most important thing is to avoid fat like oils, butters. Even too much nuts and seeds.

The book finally came! It's very interesting. Sadly, I cannot really get into reading it yet as I have one more book left to read for school but then I will. I did read the first chapter though.

What are your thoughts on raw chocolate? The book says when you eat fats (10% of your cals) you should only eat 1oz or less (like 1tbsp). Would eating 1oz raw chocolate be ok?

Also, what about foods like garlic and ginger? If added raw to salads is that ok? Why do they think they're toxic? I read one website claiming onions were toxic because of mustard oil but why would onions have mustard oil?

I haven't tried the diet, so I hope you don't mind me commenting, but I can't imagine eating 4 lbs of watermelon or 3 lbs of cantaloupe at once. I eat fresh fruit with breakfast and as a snack, but just what's considered 2 servings. The sample diet doesn't seem at first glance to supply enough nutrition. Obviously, he is the expert, and I am not.

Well, I figured that once you work up to it you get used to it. I mean, I've eaten four bananas in one sitting before and that seems like a lot to many people. And the diet does supply enough nutrition as long as you're eating enough calories (2000+). Surprising, fruits and vegetables have everything we need (except b12 unless you eat the dirt).

I can't claim to fully understand the science behind what is said in the book, but I can talk from my personal experience with the foods you mention.

Raw chocolate for me leads to feeling wired and overstimulated in a most unpleasant way. It apparently contains a neurotoxin, but I don't know about that. I just know that now my body is running more cleanly, I don't like the way raw chocolate makes me feel.

Garlic and onions I tend to avoid nowadays simply cause raw or cooked, they make me stink, moreso than they ever used to. Also if I eat them, I end up tasting them for about 48 hours, which gets kinda tedious. I use spring onions in salads, they seem fine so far.

As for ginger, I honesty don't know... I have no desire to eat it anymore so I have no experience with it since being 811

Chocolate is fine for me now but maybe when I start eating this way it will make me feel bad? I don't know.

So how do you high fruit eaters get all your fruit? Do you buy cases in bulk? How can I do that? Are there stores out there that just sell cases of stuff?

Health food store by my house doesn't sell produce. I wonder if a store like Whole Foods or Trader Joes could hook me up.

All the grocery stores around here that specialize in produce aren't organic friendly

I buy organic bananas and dates by the case from the grocery store, and then get whatever varied fruits are on sale that week. I can eat 6-8 bananas easy in a sitting, if they are blended into a smoothie. I find it easier to eat higher quantities of fruit if they are blended up - just a tip if you're finding it hard to eat enough

My coworker suggested checking places like Costco and Sam's Club to buy cases of fruit. What are your thoughts on this? I'm checking out a Sam's Club on Sunday cuz my girlfriend has a membership but I haven't been in a Sam's club in over 5 years def and never been in a Costco. But my coworker said they sell cases of fruit and sometimes organic??

EDIT: Just looked on the website. You can buy large amounts of fruit for pretty cheap but it didn't specify if it was organic or not and there were only a few on there I'd eat non-organic. They did have 10lbs of navel oranges for a little less than 8 bucks. They also had 1lb organic spinach for 4.50 and 1lb organic spring mix for the same.

Non organic is fine for fruits with thick skins which get removed, organic is always gonna be better but it's cool you've got yourself a suplier sorted!
Organic produce is not available to buy anywhere here in Bulgaria, thank heavens I have a garden and plenty of fruit trees!

No, I call ahead of time and order it. I also am car-free, though, so I have to plan ahead.

I made a salad yesterday with half a pound of dandelion greens and half a cucumber. The dressing was juice of three oranges and the other half of the cucumber blended. It was good. The dressing tasted great I could have just drank it.


Penny, besides bananas what other cases of fruit do you buy? I mean bananas yes because you eat these all the time on this diet and everyday pretty much but what about other fruits? Do you buy them normally just in larger amounts?

I *have* bought cases of cherries, oranges, and one other type of berry (strawberry) before, when I could have them delivered; but it wasn't working out too well wiht having to take off of work. So just bananas by the case and then everything else individually. I take what I can carry.

Ok so I'm 1/3 of the way through the book and I don't really like it lol. He makes a lot of claims but doesn't back up with research. For example, he'll say things like, "Studies have shown...research has shown...it's been proven..." but doesn't link to a study or place where we can find this info. Another thing he claims is that humans aren't meant to drink water. I know he means that we should be getting a majority of our water from fresh fruits but really? Some of his 'recipes' call for using a little water.

I think there are citations at the end of the book, though. ?

It's true, he doesn't provide study references. I'm guessing the book was not meant to be read as an academic one. I'm sure the studies can be tracked down online though if you're interested.

On the water thing, I think he's saying that if we were in an unspoiled equatorial forest environment, living entirely as nature intended we would not need to drink water. We'd get it from fruits and veggies as you say, plus the humid environment would help us retain water. Living as we do in the modern world water is important. He does list clean water a couple of times as being vital for health, so I don't see what he is saying as being anti water, he's just explaining how it would be in our original environment and conditions. I know some fruitarians think that you don't need water at all as you can get it from fruits, but they all look like hell lol

He does have some but there are numerous sections int he book where one should be there. Plus there is a reference to Dr. Mercola??? lol

Durianrider on YouTube is a great proponent of 80/10/10 but he suggests drinking plenty of water.
