"[He] passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital," his rep, Danica Smith, told PEOPLE. "No other details are available at this time. We ask that his family's privacy continues to be respected."

On Aug 1, Mac was admitted to a hospital at Northwestern Memorial hospital with pneumonia said his rep, adding that he was expected to recover, despite widespread rumors about the seriousness of his condition.

I just heard this a few minutes ago in the middle of Olympics coverage.

I hadn't heard about him being sick - and I have to echo the youth sentiment, he's younger than both my parents and step-parents

Wow. I was never a HUGE fan of his, but I did find him rather entertaining most of the time. That's horrible. I hope his family handles it as well as possbile.

I was shocked when I heard the news. I had heard he was sick with pneumonia, but who DIES from that in this day and age.

I was shocked too.He seemed to be a nice guy.

The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs, but had said the condition went into remission in 2005. He recently was hospitalized and treated for pneumonia, which his publicist said was not related to the disease.

He was one of my all time favorite comedians, besides George Carlin. I'm very very sad that he's gone and I will miss him. Anyone that can make me laugh the way he did is a rare gem.
