Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 84.
Getty, who had advanced dementia, died about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.
"Somewhere along the way, someone is going to tell you, 'There is no "I" in team.' What you should tell them is, 'Maybe not. But there is an "I" in independence, individuality and integrity." Â George Carlin
Amazingly she passed at the same age her character on the show was. She was the best of the group IMHO, the ex made me sit through hours of GGs on Lifetime. I don't miss her. (the ex that is)
Estelle (Stop or My Mom Will Shoot) Getty will be missed!!!!
I know it! about a month ago I watched a few Golden Girl's reruns and wondered if any of them were still around and I was surprised to find out that they all were AND that Estelle was younger than both Rose and Dorothy. Amazing. I will miss her. Such an entertainer!
