Quote:
[(CBS/AP) Burger King is apologizing to singer Mary J. Blige and her fans for releasing an ad that some people believed to be stereotypical, and garnered the singer serious fan backlash.

The clip featured Blige soulfully singing about the fast-food chain's new chicken snack wraps. It immediately went viral when it was released Monday, and some in the black community said it was stereotypical. Burger King pulled the ad Tuesday over what the company said was a music-licensing issue. The company explained Wednesday the spot was unfinished.

In a statement, Blige said she understood why fans were upset. She said the ad didn't come across the way it was planned and she would never put out an unfinished spot.

Burger King said the ad was released prematurely and it hopes to have the final ad on the air soon.

I don't get it? Singing about a chicken sandwich is racist now? If it was a grilled chicken sandwich would it be any less offensive?

I'm pretty sure it's not racist. People just love being offended by things these days. I would be curious to know who the "some in the black community" referred to are.

We are all copies of the same machine.

Apparently it's stereotypical for blacks to like chicken (in America anyway). So I guess a black person can't actually like chicken in public... or something...

I think if I were one of her fans I'd be more upset that she actually performed in an ad at all, but whatever.

Jesus saved me, but the file was corrupted.

Disagree. It totally reinforces the racial stereotype of black people doing Burgerking ads for a lot of money.

What do you mean that isn't a stereotype?

I just watched it on TMZ. It's painfully cheesy and corny as heck but I wasn't offended... Seems like they're are just looking for something to be offended about. in the last year I swear people have become more thin-skinned than ever.

McDonalds has been doing this for a while now, not sure if it centered on the food but they put them in stereotypical places and situations, they are not very subtle when it comes to what customer base they are going after.

So you are all completely ignorant of the history of racial stereotyping in America? This is starting to make me wonder at the wisdom of censoring old films, books, and advertising, if this is what it leads to.

So now black people can't show they like chicken if they just happen to? Mary J Blige was a willing participant, and who knows if the people behind the commercial are black or not? Ya there's stereotypes about everyone, personally i think most of them are funny for any race, there's stereotypes and then there's racism, and there is a difference, if i said white people can't dance that dos not = i hate white people, i know racism can be defined the same as a stereotype, but i'd say racist people are the ones prejudice towards a race.

I'd say that is up to black people to come to a consensus on.

Just watched it, it's stupid but not stereotypical or racist in any way, the people watching her and buying the chicken are white, not like they put a burger king full of black people saying yay chicken. Do black people have to be afraid and not eat chicken anymore because apparently other black people would say they are perpetuating a stereotype? (Although obviously for us anyone eating less chicken is good)

I hope so.

I remember this a few years ago. Australian ad agencies made the ad, blissfully unaware of the stereotype of african americans liking chicken. That was the first that I had heard of it too. There arent a lot of African Americans living around these parts, so noone knows about these things.

There is no "consensus" among black people. They are all individuals.

Mary J. Blige is a black person. Evidently, she didn't have a problem singing about chicken sandwiches.

Also, claiming that this BK commercial is racist trivializes actual racism.

I think Mary J Blige should sing about chickpea burgers. In fact I am tempted to pick one up today.

I believe I said "come to a consensus" did I not? Or are you claiming that there isn't a single black person who shares an idea or opinion with a single other one? That they can't come to an agreement or form a majority opinion on any subject?

So were these entertainers. They don't look like they had any problems selling out for money either.

^Im not sure that I would really hold up those 1920-1960 movies of a display of any kind of equality. Women were portrayed as being pretty dumb in many of those movies too....

The point is that you will always find individuals of any oppressed group willing to sell out for enough money. Just because one or two black people don't find something racist doesn't mean those black people who do are wrong.

But what really amazes me in this thread that there are white people posting in it who presume to tell black people what they should or shouldn't find racist. Outrageous.

No, but I don't think a majority opinion determines whether something is racist. There should be some reasoning behind it.
