Orphaned animals. They die or you breast feed. Would you do it? Why or why not?

This is beautiful. I wouldn't think twice.

No?

Humans drink the milk of cows and take it from their young forcing harm, death and stress to both the mother and the baby. Why would it be gross to return the favor to an animal that needs it?

Well, in many cases they would die anyway because they are not meant to drink human milk. I remember it happening with some little tigers about 6 or 7 years ago. A lady nursed them (yes really!) but they died from malnutrition. Monkeys and apes would probably be ok with human milk. I wouldn't nurse an animal and risk death anyway. I'd try to find an appropriate substitute. But if I knew my milk would be helpful? Sure, I guess, if my baby didn't need it for some reason.

This is soooo going to get flamed, but if I have misgivings about breast feeding my own kid, forget about an animal.

Yeah I have issues with any species - human or otherwise - drinking milk out of me. Don't worry I have burn ointment for the both of us for when we get flamed.

Oh good, *gets jug of aloe*.

And, for future clarification, thats totally cool with me if other women want to nurse, say, a baby sloth, just not me.

Um yeah, I doubt that would ever be necessary.

That wasn't the question.

Ok then, no, I wouldn't feel the need to hold an animal to my breast, I'm not entirely sure my nipples would stand up to that sort of treatment and it's creepy. If for some reason it was genuinely necessary and of use and there would be enough milk for my own baby, I would extract the milk and use a bottle for the animal.

Oh absolutely. I'm genetically male but take hormones to create milk production so I can make non-toxic, vegan, casein glue, for use in producing vegan, non-toxic, lickable, envelopes (you can order them on my web site), but I make more milk than needed for envelope production, so I'd definitly breastfeed any mammal — a cat, a bat, a rat, or whatever — that needed milk. Definitly.

And don't forget, if you order 10 or more envelopes, I donate a 1/4 of a cup of milk to an orphaned rat. How about that!

And if you have several piglets to feed, free-range just don't cut it - go industrial:

A newborn human would die if only fed cows milk, probably any other species milk. Same the other way around. Shows why we shouldn't use it.

I'd pump because I'm not letting and animal suck my breast and scratch me all up. But, if I was lactating and an animal would die without it, sure, pump and serve.

Newborn goats and lambs survive nicely on full-fat cows' milk and newborn pigs survive nicely on goats' milk, provided they have ingested some colostrum in their first 48 hrs. of life. Even without the passive transfer of colostral antibodies they can and do survive, but are much more immunologically fragile and require exponentially more attention to every detail of their hygiene and diet.

Keep on freepin' on

I would never let a human baby or other animal put their mouth on my boobies. If by some stretch of the imagination I had been pregnant and lactating and there was some animal or baby that needed my milk, I would use a pump no problem.

I didn't realize so many young women were grossed out by the idea of breastfeeding (human or other animal). I would guess a lot of that has to do with the fact that much of Western culture views breasts as solely sexual in nature, rather than with respect to their primary biologicalpurpose, i.e, the nurturing of infants.

P.S. Not trying to start an argument - I just find it interesting.

Woman's breastmilk fails to satisfy tiger cubs

Posted Thu May 12, 2005 8:09pm AEST

It is reported that two endangered Bengal tiger cubs, breastfed for weeks by a Burmese woman, have died of dehydration.

The two cubs, a male and a female, were taken from their mother, Noah Noah, after she killed the third cub in her litter in March.

Hla Htay, 40, a relative of a Rangoon Zoological Gardens staffer, stepped in when she learned the cubs needed breast milk to survive.

But the cubs had trouble digesting human breast milk, which combined with the grinding heat proved fatal, the chief veterinarian at the zoo has told Interview Journal.

"The weather is too hot. The tiger cubs were not a month old when they stopped receiving their mother's milk," Khin Maung Win told the Burmese-language weekly.

"They just had the human mother breastfeeding, but their livers could not process the human milk. We tried to treat them," he said.

The cubs were the first born at the zoo for 16 years.

Noah Noah and her mate were among two pairs of tigers sent from Thailand under an animal exchange program in 2001.

The report said the zoo plans to stuff the cubs and put them on display.

okay maybe it's not a great idea but it's still a great album cover.

I'm not even young and it grosses me out too, baby human or other animal. As in, to do it myself. I don't care what others do.

I'd just like to clarify that I find the idea of breastfeeding an animal of a different species creepy, not my own child, it would make me so sad not to be able to breastfeed my own baby.

breast feeding is not porn, beast or otherwise.

I agree that its not a reasonable course of action (for the physiological reasons already stated), but to me, the image is more about the moral value of an infant unrelated to the woman, whether its human or not.

Well let's be honest Kal, it wouldn't be the first time you've had some animal licking at your nipples.

Actually, it's from a Tori Amos album:

Apparently (according to her) she was also experimenting pretty heavily with hallucinogenics at the time
