I just got a hangup call; first in a long time. They make me paranoid, and I want to know the number they called from. Is there something I can dial that will just let me get the number without calling the number back?

That calls them back.

ETA: No, there's no way to get the number if you aren't already subscribed to caller ID.

It may be worth a try to call your phone company, they should have that information.
