So I recently made the decision to go Vegan, but I have some belts that may or may not be leather and I would like to know if there is some fool proof way of figuring that out since I don't want to throw them all not for fear of them being so or not. Anyone know?

Look at how the belt is constructed. If it's one solid slab of "leather", it's probably real. If it's "bonded" (more than one layer of material), it could be either one. Fake leather tends to be stretchier (look at the holes - have they stretched out?). Look at the edges, to see if there are any fabric fibers, or if there's any indication of leather texture.

Smell them. Leather has a very distinctive odor.

I've also heard if you heat up a sharp object, such as a pin or tack, and you press it on a small area of it you can tell if its leather or fake by the smell.

The only fool proof way to tell if a belt is leather or synthetic is to read it on a tag or printed on the belt itself. That is unless you can clearly tell the belt is nylon or fabric or metal or something.

The smell test doesn't work. I have some 100% vegan belts that smell like leather. I've seen some 100% leather belts that smell like plastic. The only way to tell is to read it.

Otherwise, it's just a guess.

With old, questionable belts, there is no sure way to tell. Perhaps a melt-test... but I'd test it out first on a belt that you know for sure is leather and one you know for sure isn't. Perhaps the results are too similar to tell apart, just like with smells.

It's always worked for me. People's senses of smell are all very different though.
