Our bodies are hard-wired to enjoy fatty, greasy foods. Consumer choice exists, of course, but being healthy can be an uphill battle in a world where unhealthy foods are carefully crafted to stimulate our inborn appetites.
As with smoking, the time has come to place responsibility upon the suppliers and advertisers of unhealthy foods.
"Balanced" already has the support of Kaiser Permanente, the largest managed-care insurance company in the United States.
If you read the "Balanced" website, it is sensible. It simply demands that food companies and public institutions serve meals that comply with the USDA's Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Since 2015, the USDA has clearly recommended a primarily plant-based diet, with only about 20% of the meal plate filled with protein-rich food (plant and/or animal), and 80% of the plate filled with grains, vegetables, and fruit:
