Vegan Omega-3's ALA and DHA

So I have heard that while you can get all of your ALA omega-3 from vegan sources the conversion from ALA to DHA, which is also essential to health is inefficient. Especially if your diet does not contain enough ALA to compensate.

How much of a problem is it and how do you know if you need a vegan algae DHA supplement?

Dr Greger has a lot of information on his website for you to research.

We do take (when we remember) Ascenta NutraVege.

Vegan Outreach has a very detailed webpage on this topic, with citations to peer-reviewed studies: http://veganhealth.org/articles/omega3

I think I got this from Dr Gregor- that those raised on a diet with adequate omega ratios are typically much better at converting them to usable DHA.
When I tried an algae oil dha supplement I really found a difference in my mental focus. It was replicated when I finished the bottle and after some time got another. My favorite is Ovega3, https://www.amazon.com/Ovega-3-Veget...3%2Bvegan&th=1
but have been buying Vitacost brand as it's always available and more cost effective.
https://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-ve...gan-softgels-1Hah! It's out of stock!
I get no algae burps from those, but have had others that are extremely 'fishy'-smells like it just opening bottle and have given me burps-ewwww

I also take ground flax every day and try to use little oil

I really have to take issue with the all-inclusive statement of "If you want your DHA levels to be the same as non-vegetarians"
The only good sources of DHA are found in sea FOODS, whether fish or algae sourced. I very very rarely ate any kinds of sea foods as an omni, so I'm sure I'm getting more now that I'm vegan!

Thinking that omnis have higher levels would only apply if they eat fish. Right?

Good question. I'm not sure if/how omnivores typically obtain DHA. The data on the DHA levels of non-vegetarians vs. vegetarians comes from peer-reviewed studies done in the United States, the UK, Chile, and Australia. The Vegan Outreach webpage includes links to these studies: http://veganhealth.org/articles/omega3#n3intake
