Hi Garyp,

As TerriNC said, the boxing / martial arts world includes a number of vegetarians and vegans. MMA fighter Jake Shields is a lifelong vegetarian: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Shields . Former world champion Muay Thai fighter Jan Muller has been a vegetarian since age 14, and became vegan after that:

Because you are interested in making the vegan transition with minimum difficulty (in order to retain and improve your physical fitness), you might consider making an appointment with a Registered Dietitian. A Registered Dietitian is a professional with a university degree and agency certification in human nutrition. You can find Registered Dietitians that specialize in vegetarian/vegan diets, as well as in sports nutrition.

In the United States, you can find a local Registered Dietitian through this website: http://www.eatright.org . Just click on the "Find an Expert" button, located in the upper-right-hand portion of the webpage. This website also allows you to select the nutrition specialties that you need (such as vegetarian diets, and sports nutrition).

In the U.K., you can find a local Registered Dietitian on the Freelance Dietitians website: http://www.freelancedietitians.org/

In New Zealand, you can find a local Registered Dietitian through the Dietitians New Zealand website: http://dietitians.org.nz/find-a-dietitian/

In Canada, you can find a local Registered Dietitian at the Dietitians of Canada website: http://www.dietitians.ca/Find-a-Dietitian.aspx .

Hi GaryP and welcome! You are making a great decision! My son is a black belt martial artist at 22; he has been vegetarian since the age of 10 and vegan since about 12.

Just last night in his class, a visiting sensei (who is one of the top in the country) told my son that he has some of the strongest punches and elbows that he has seen. Son literally knocked the stuffing out of the punching target, which brought up this comment from the teacher. :D

Son eats very healthy, with no body building supplements or steroids, doesn't lift heavy weights. He runs, does pullups, situps, pushups, that kind of thing. He uses hemp and pea protein in his morning green smoothies, but otherwise he just eats (a lot!) of healthy plant-based food.

You can do this--it is easier to eat healthy if you put aside a little time to cook...
