Thread: Singulair (asthma medicine)

    Singulair (asthma medicine)

I recently stopped taking Singulair for my asthma. I stopped taking it because my mom and I were thinking that it may be the cause of my ear problems (pain in both ears and hearing loss). I weened myself off of it, going from my normal 5mg dose, to 2.5, and now none.

Once I starting taking a lower dose I did notice that the pain in my ears did lessen, though it was still there. I haven?t taken any Singulair since Thursday, and my ears have only hurt a few times.

I am curious if anyone else has had trouble due to Singulair. I am not having the easiest time breathing, and do greatly miss the Singulair. I have been taking another medicine, Pulmicort, along with Singulair, but it isn?t really doing the trick. I am going to the doctor on the 15 am and going to ask if there is a different asthma medicine I could try, because right now I would do anything to get rid of my ear problems.

i have VERY severe asthma and singulair did NOTHING for me. i stopped taking it and have been taking something called ADVAIR and it's great!!!!! i've had asthma for 30 years and this is the best stuff EVER and trust me....if they made it for asthma i've taken it. i've had no side effects and maybe i use my rescue inhaler once a week. i used to go thru 1-2 per MONTH.

Singulair might have as adverse events: pharyngitis, sinusitis, impaired nore breathing - so singulais might be the culprid for your ear problems.
Singulair works on the leukotriens in order not having to use steroids. Advair isn´t comparable to singulair because it´s a combination of a corticosteroid ( fluticasone) and salmeterol.

yea but it WORKS. which is my point. most of drug therapy (especially asthma i found) is trial and error. if one doesn't work or side effects are too much something else might.

Drug therapy definately is trial and error. Pulmicort does absolutly nothing for me. I have been using my albuterol inhalor about 3 times a day now.

I got really freaked out last night because I was home alone and felt like something was pushing down on my chest. If I don't get adjusted to no Singulair in 2 more days I am going to go back on it until I go to the doctor (and hopefully get a different med.). It is nice not having ear pain, but I think being able to breath is higher up on the priority list

    I use Ventolin (when needed).

    Works good for me.

You could also give this a thought : www.buteyko.com

I haven't done the course myself, but I try it before I take medication and often it works.

Sandiemac: actually my point was: it´s stronger than singulair, and great that it works with you.

sorry i missed that point. it may also work for vegansurfer...singulair does'nt seem to be compatible for her...and you can't just rely on albuterol 3x day and struggle in between. maybe low does advair (100/50) or even plain serevent

Yes you´re right, it might work for her, but she has to try it out by herself.

My mum is on Singulair with out a problem. I've just been put on Seretide (preventor and reliever in one) which is excellent. Have you tried that yet? Its a puffer but it looks like a spaceship - its a purple circle thingy.
