    Cheerios

The Peta list of "I Can't believe It's Vegan" foods lists Cheerios as vegan. Last I checked cheerios had sugar in it where bone char is used to purify the sugar used in the cereal. Unless there is a vegan version of Cheerios I do not know about. Can someone fill me in?

i don't think the "i can't believe it's vegan" list takes bone char filtered sugar or vitamin D3 into account.

they don't have whey, and i don't think the regular ones have honey. the honey-nut ones would.

Cheerios in Canada, as far as I've seen, don't contain D3.

re bone char: If it's really this large of an issue for you (ie you won't eat anything processed w/ sugar if the source is unknown), you should also check with your local water company. Many cities' water supply is filtered through bone char. As is many bottled water companies. And purchasing spring water brings with it many environmental concerns.

Blech. The thing I've been finding funny about Cheerios (and others like it) is that they advertise how "healthy" they are with the whole grain, yet things like sugar are within the first five ingredients. However, we're not supposed to be intelligent, informed consumers; We're to be blind, naive, lemmings who are supposed to believe whatever the companies and media tells us. Yeah. Not happening.

Thanks for the info on the water. I'll look into that sometime. I don't normally consume tap water. We refill jugs at the water thing at Wal-Mart. (I would like a faucet filter or pitcher filter, but I've not gotten that far yet and my husband doesn't mind the hassle of the jugs (including carrying the 10 full ones up to our third floor apartment). Sorry. I'm digressing.

Cheerios only has one gram of sugar per serving. http://www.cheerios.com/about/cheerios.asp

True. And some large buildings (shopping malls, some grocery store chains, etc) actually filter their AIR through a charcoal type filter that has bone char in it...
God's original plan was to hang out in a garden with some naked vegetarians.

The Cheerios in the US (I see the box every single day at work, lol) contain "Vitamin D". When I contacted them many moons ago, GM said that the source of the D varies, so they just list "D".

As far as the healthfulness of Cheerios..they're not so bad, especially if you eat them like little kids do, without the milk. Some added vitamins, very little sugar, and a good dose of fiber.
So don't you sit apon the shore line, and say you're satisfied.

Only some vegans consider sugar to be unvegan. Cause while it can be processed through bone char, that doesn't make the sugar itself have any animal products in it. Also it's not always processed through bone char, only sometimes it is.

I'm not saying that I'll never eat Cheerios again, I just find the irony amusing. Awhile ago I bought a box of Alpha-Bits cereal. The advertisement I saw in a magazine said that they were better than Cheerios because they had whole grain, no sugar, and more vitamins and minerals. I had a dollar off coupon. At Wal-Mart (I know, evil), with the coupon, they were only $1.24. They're not bad, but could use some sweetening (I would mix them with some Kashi).

Yeah, I'll give my kids Cheerios, just no milk.
