    Soy Concerns

    Hi everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has run across these recent reports about the dangers of soy foods, in particular, the processed, unfermented ones, i.e. soy milk, soy cheese, soy mock meats.

I include some sites to check out:

    http://www.cnn.com/2000/HEALTH/diet....oy.danger.wmd/
    http://xtramsn.co.nz/health/0,,8234-1245373,00.html
    http://www.susunweed.com/Weed_letter...1.htm#surprise

    Anyone have any thoughts?

i have. i believe it's a conspiracy cooked up by the dairy farmers.

I don't know about that Ghoststar. Have you been to Susun Weed's site. She is a green witch and teaches the Wise Woman Traditions. I don't think that she would be part of a conspiracy of the Dairy Monkeys.

I am doing a little experiment right now. I am avoiding all soy products. Believe me when I tell you that that is very hard to do. It is everywhere!! I am using goat's milk. You see, about 4 years ago I gave up a lot of dairy in favour of soy products. I used soy milk and ate soy meat analogs. I have noticed that my memory and concentration has not been very good. I have also gained weight and it is very hard to lose it. (harder then it would normally be).

My point is that soy may be good for you but the way that people jump on the bandwagon for any new health product is to overdo it. Maybe we are all eating too much.

I would recommend moderation with soy products. I have read the warnings but I also see Japanese culture and their use of soy products in moderation and how healthy they are.

And, I can't say I entirely diagree with Ghoststar's assessement of the dairy industry.

it is possible that Susan Weed isn't fully competent to discuss the benefits vs. risks of soy use. what is she basing her position on? that dodgey little study performed by enig and fallon a few years ago? that's all anyone who is touting the anti-soy horn these days seems to have read. it's also been thoroughly debunked:

soy is actually considered to be one of the most allergenic foods known to man. you are right; soy products are in almost everything. it's used as a filler in all kinds of foods, and soybean oil, too. your health problems may be associated with a sensitivity to soy, or any other of the highly allerginic foods found in everything these days: wheat, corn, dairy, egg, gluten, peanuts. is this a problem with soy itself, or is this a problem with your own body being unable to effectively use and digest soy products?

also, four years is a long enough time for your metabolism to have changed enough that losing weight would be more difficult for you. again, not neccessarily directly related to your soy consumption. correlation is not causation.

any kind of food in moderation, and any kind of food eaten after undergoing minimal processing, are the keys to good nutrition. if you feel better after reducing the amount of (highly processed) soy products you were consuming, good for you. it doesn't neccessarily mean that soy is the big bad monster that some people want to paint it out to be.

Let go of my ears; I know what I'm doing.

    Soy Concerns

Kreeli, your post raises some very good points. Your web link, though, does not clearly show soy as good or bad and that is entirely correct.

I would point out that consumption of soy products is actually relatively low in Japan with the average daily consumption of a Japanese man at 2 tsp. and they combine that with small amounts of meat.

While some try to "debunk" the benefits and argue the disadvantages of soy products, I would like you to consider this. We all know that the dairy industry is involved in a conspiracy. But who is benefiting from us all consuming large amounts of soy. As I have said, it is everywhere. The soy producers are the ones benefiting. Since soy is probably one of the first and the largest GMO crops, I believe that we are being used as guinea pigs for GM studies. If you do eat soy then please make sure that it is organic.

I hope that I am not coming across as doomsayer. I am just concerned about my health and that of the Earth. And I hate greedy corporations!!!

right. whereas the study put out by fallon and enig painted soy with a big old nasty dripping brush of evil. so, it follows that their study (which bashes soy to the extreme, and makes untested theories and speculation sound like fact), is for the most part, untrue. i think it should be pointed out that one of the women that did that study has ulterior motives in that she runs a website, and has written books, touting the benefits of consuming whole, organic, unpasteurized cow's milk. which vegans know to be bunk, since cow's milk, no matter how unprocessed, is still intended for calves, not humans.

correction: the average daily consumpton of soy protein is approximately 2 tsp. per day, in japan. if you look at a carton of soymilk, or a package of tofu, you will see that the level of protein in it, is relatively small. in other words, you can drink more than two tsp. of soymilk, or eat more than tsp. of tofu or soy sauce, and still only consume a relatively small amount out of soy protein.

well, i have noticed, as probably many others have as well, that the companies that are now getting heavily involved in the manufacture of soy products (soy milk, specifically) are the dairy companies. they ain't dummies! of course each industry is out to try and make a buck...at least the soy industry isn't exploiting and torturing animals to further their profits. so if we are looking at it from a 'big nasty evil industry' standpoint, i still feel that, speaking from a karmic viewpoint, it is better to support the soy producers, than the dairy producers.

i totally appreciate your viewpoint. i have seen the "soy is EVIL" message time and again over the last few years, and i feel it's really important to counteract that with as little dogma and as much true information as possible. i also agree that consuming a few processed foods (like soymilk and soy meats) as possible, is a good idea. i just can't accept that the sweet little soybean is the Devil. it's a bean. how bad can it be?

I haven't read any of the pro or anti soy articles yet (I'm too busy with school), so I don't know if soy is bad or not, but here are some websites that say soy is safe:
    http://www.vegsource.com/articles/al...soy_update.htm
    http://www.veganoutreach.org/health/soysafe.html
    http://www.foodrevolution.org/what_about_soy.htm

Also, there are other "milks" out there for people who don't like soy: rice milk, almond milk, oat milk... At a health food store I saw tins of vegetarian protein powder that said "soy-free" on it. It was rice protein. I'd like to have more Quinoa in my diet, but it's hard to get because I live with my non-veggie parents and they only shop at Safeway and Costco! I don't have much of my own spending money either because I am a full-time student.
