If i'm going to think what I wish, how about no one eats animal products and "milk cows" as you call them are left the **** alone?

I'm not advocating for the dairy industry - quite the opposite.

No matter how just and moral the cause, it's weakened if you base your arguments on misinformation - it gives the opponents of the cause a weapon with which to attack not only those spouting the misinformation, but all those who advocate for the cause. (I.e., it just permits people to point their fingers and say, "See, these crazy AR people don't know what they're talking about.")

That's especially sad when the truth is as powerful as it is in the AR movement, and when so much depends on it.

What is objectionable, what is dangerous, about extremists is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents. RFK

I don't recall arguing with anyone for a cause in this thread.

No, but, as an ethical veg*n, you are perceived, by the world at large, as a representative of AR/AW, whether you wish or not, just like the rest of us.

Good thing I don't talk to people about "milk cows" then!

Yeah, well around people who actually know anything about cows, I use the terminology "cows" for those who have been bred for milk production, and "cattle" for those who have been bred specifically to be eaten. However, that's not shorthand that's understood by people who have the same level of knowledge of the actual animals as the people who buy into the "happy cows" commercials.

Omnis may disagree with my ethical stances concerning animals, but at least they can't dismiss me as someone who is not just uninformed, but proudly misinformed.

Vegetarian for animal rights. I hate meat it tastes gross and I always thought it was weird eating animals. It's only been a few months but I already know I'd like to eventually be vegan, or at least almost vegan. Right now I'm living at home and can't afford my own groceries. I might try veganism when I transfer to a 4 year college next year, but if not my goal is when I get my own place and buy my own groceries. I always think "ack it will be so inconvinient" especially with my omni milk loving boyfriend, but I just feel so bad contributing to the dairy company, I'll make it work.

I'm vegetarian because of health reasons and lifestyle, work related. So vegan is out of the question. Though my diet is vegan I don't like eggs or milk even cheese, I prepare or cook my own food it's so easy being vegan. The secret is eating alot of raw foods, then you'll not miss the greasy stuff.

I have seen cows in terrible pain when they are not milked. That doesn't mean that they enjoy being hooked up to machine and pumped either. But, I guess I don't see why this issue really got going. I know MLP isn't justifying milk consumption but I'm unsure how cows not being milked was even brought into this? I think I missed something. If everyone stopped consuming dairy today right this instant, the animals would be slaughtered anyway so drying them up their milk wouldn't be something that needed being done. I totally agree that knowledge is power. Know about the animals and the farming methods because if you don't, you'll be called on it. That is a freaking sucky feeling to lose a debate over terminology and hind sight is ruthless. Know the gestation cycles of sows and things like that. Just saying. Dairy is brutal no matter the lactation periods or procedure.

+! That pretty much sums it up for me too, why I'm vegan.

This is not to say I don't see reasons to be vegetarian. There are health reasons, environmental reasons, etc. Those make sense to me when people explain "this is why I'm vegetarian." I will admit, however, that I cannot wrap my head around the idea of an ethical vegetarian. I cannot, no matter how hard I try, force it to make logical sense in my brain. I don't get it. At all.

    I really don't either.

Winter tucks her children in, her fragile china dolls

Naked arms, her secrets still like songs I'd never learned
