    advocate-

you can make a pretty good fake-out of crab cakes with old bay, zucchini and some random other stuff- there are about a million recipes, and some don't have eggs.

Me- I keep telling my roommate that if she wants to cook and eat bacon while I'm home, it's fine, but I'm going to watch very closely and ask all kinds of flavor questions. I miss bacon. I crave bacon- more than 6 years out- but if you put it on a plate in front of me and told me to eat it, I'd probably gag.

Dr. Neal Bernard in his book "Breaking the Food Addiction" presents research that states that meat is actually addicting and can cause cravings. It's been a few years since I've read it, so I can't remember the biochemistry of it, but it's there for some folks.

I think cravings to things like sweets is stronger though.

ROFL ahh bacon! My family makes the stuff EVERY morning! [talk about waking up hungry!] I think I will always miss the junk, but it just ain't worth it! And let's talk about how there's like NO substitute for bacon! (anyone tried the Morningstar variety? yucko...)

Have you tried Bacon Salt? It tastes a lot like bacon, so I use it as a seaoning to dishes that I have ve*ganized that used to have bacon. So yummy!

See if there is a farm sanctuary in your area and go pet a cow or pig

    Works wonders.

I've been worried about this, too, but not as much as I was the last few times I tried to go veg. I think living in a bigger city with places like Whole Foods and lots of veg-friendly restaurants helps. Where I used to live, I was fine if I cooked for myself, but it was absolutely AWFUL if I had to go out anywhere. And back then, I was far more concerned with inconveniencing other people than I was with sticking to my choices. Pathetic, I know, but admitting it is half the battle.

I have stocked my fridge with TVP and Quorn products (I LOVE Quorn) and I really don't feel the same achey craving for meat. Maybe it just took getting to a point where I felt sick of my choices. Maybe it was temping in a slaughterhouse (ohmygawdtheawful). Maybe it was moving to a bigger city where I actually know other people who are vegetarians and vegans. Maybe it was a combination of all these things. But I think both of us can beat this, and, like some others have said, before too long, meat won't even be food anymore.

In fact, "Meat is not food," has become my motto in the last month, which I probably should have mentioned earlier. Every time I've thought about something I used to eat, I say to myself, "No, you can't have that. Meat is not food."

    Good luck!

Mrs. Skittles, no I haven't tried Bacon Salt! Looks wonderful, I see it advertised on here all the time. Gotta get some sometime!

And to Vindaloo, I was raised on a farm with my grandparents. We had cows, pigs, and chickens. In fact, now they even have pet deer. Now that is truly a wonderful experience to pet a wild deer!
