So for about 3 to 4 years I took in strays and helped them to find there owners or new owners *I no longer do that*. Here are some that I remember clear as day...
Puddles:My cousin and I where walking my dog Pheobie and my neighbors dog, We saw a little black dog run across the street. We ran over there and saw him, a little black Chihuahua. Puddles went to a No-Kill shelter and adopted to a family with 3 kids and another Chihuahua.
Freya and Rufus: I was sitting in my drive way and saw 2 dogs run up to me. One was a Shepard mix and one was like a Mastiff Mix of some sort. Male and Female. I noticed someone abandoned them about 30 feet from my house and left a pile of dog food there. I was sad to find that out. I had them at my house for about 2 weeks, they actually found an injured bird that I rescued as well. Rufus found a home with a man and his lab, and Freya went to a farm out of town.
Milky Way:I was walking Pheobie when this German Wire Haired Pointer I found a Pointer. He was skinny and hungry. I had him for about 2 weeks when we THOUGHT he found a home with a lady and her son. About a month later He came back and jumped my fence! So we took him to the shelter where the lady said he got out and they where looking for him.
Katie:Katie was a dog we found that was skinny, and infested with ticks. We took her to a vet, nursed her back to health and then my fathers friend with a Pit Bull and 2 kitties.
Pheobie: We found Pheobie skinny and matted on the side of the road. She still lives with us 7 years later:)

That's really great to hear. I have tried to do this as well, mostly just returning neighborhood dogs that manage to find their way into my yard. Once the young dog I was trying to help just wouldn't come to me, even after I tried to win its trust for half an hour.

Does the term "stray" apply to all homeless dogs, or just the ones that are kind of feral? I generally don't think of dogs that have just gotten loose as "strays"

I would call all homeless dogs (or cats!) "strays", but I would not consider an animal homeless if it simply jumped a fence (or otherwise got out temporarily).

Good question, though; not one I'd ever thought about before.

And FreestylePup, that's awesome.

I apply the term Stray to dogs that are currently not living at a residence. I also say Wild, to actually feral dogs.

Stray to me means homeless.

It's great you helped those dogs. :)
Do you plan on doing it again, and just can't right now, or havnt found a dog? I was just interested since you said you no longer do it.

I don't plan on doing it again... Getting 2 dogs, plus the pets I already have is a lot. When I did take those pups in I did not have all the pets I have, I had 2 or 3 bunnies, a couple fish, and my one other dog. Now I have much more then that so I can't really take another dog in, in the fear that it might try to kill one of my pets now since I have so many, I can't just lock all the rabbits away for a dog that wondered in.
