its a way of saying 'vegetarian and/or vegan' without writing that whole chunk of words and getting tired fingers.
the star can replace the 'etari' in vegetarian, and the 'a' in vegan, and the 'and/or' bit in the middle, all in one go.
useful for when you're talking about something that could apply to both groups.
like.... you could type:
"carrots are suitable for veg*ns".
.....instead of:
"carrots are suitable for vegetarians and/or vegans".
(both vegetarians and vegans can eat carrots).

Can someone update the FAQ? I don't feel it is properly stated that veg*n can call for both. I didn't get it.
