Is there anything more to it than the soap opera it appears to be from the first five episodes?

I watched the first season, and loved it.
The second season... lost me after the third episode or so.
I'm so over it. =]

DH and I are watching the first season on DVD. I think we're on episode 8. I'm finding it very entertaining, and I just love the costumes and the sets.
