I saw these for the first time this weekend. I was shopping at PacSun and saw a big tag reading "Vegan". It was very prominently displayed. There were a few styles. Unfortunately, I don't really like any of the styles out yet, but hopefully they'll come out with one I like eventually, so I can get a pair for Tim. Right now though, he's digging his Rowley's.
I started talking to the guy that worked there and he said that before they got those shoes in, he didn't even know what a vegan was. The tag made him curious.
I guess MacBeth shoes were started by some big name bands (punk) looking for animal-free footwear. Even the glue is vegan! Here is their site: http://www.macbethshoes.com/eliot.html
Has anyone else seen these yet?
As a side note, I found a Dawls shirt at Gadzooks with a cow on it asking "Please Don't Eat Me". Also, at Goody's I saw a shirt with a picture of a cow with a shocked expression reading, "Hamburgers are made of what?!". Seeing that I'm not in a very veg friendly area, I find these things to be wonderfully cool.

I like the Eliot style, the vegan one.

But I noticed that the other styles are not vegan. The Lee's description says: "The upper is the latest in action leather with suede trim." The Oscar: "The best full grain leathers with a suede toe guard and logos." The London: "This shoe is built with thick suede in the upper." Too bad.

It makes me think they are offering a vegan shoe to cash in on a trend. I have mixed feelings about that. It is good to know that companies are feeling the pressure. Buying the vegan shoe might send the message that the demand for vegan products means they should offer more vegan styles. But I doubt they are going to eliminate their non-vegan styles and their company philosophy is not to promote veganism but rather to make money off of vegans as well as non-vegans.

Still, I might look at the shoes... their store locater says there is a store in our local mall. I can't afford shoes right now but soon I'll be able to, and I do like the style...

I didn't even notice that the others on the site weren't vegan. I just looked at the first one so I could add a link. Thanks for pointing that out.
