I've so far only tried two milk substitutes. Soy milk (my fave) and rice milk.
We bought one carton of each and tried the soy milk first. We didn't try the rice milk until like 2 weeks after buying it. Now as it was stored in room temperature on the shelf, I'd have thought 2 weeks in the fridge wouldn't matter. But when I tried it it was very transparent - like cow's milk watered out a lot. It also had flaky bits floating in it and it had the appearance of water (compared to soy milk which is like normal milk - slightly thicker than water). Is this REALLY how it's meant to be :S ? Cos it's left me hesitant to try Oat milk, and I want to try it but I'm just wondering if I got a dodgy bit of rice milk. The brand was Rice Dream if anyone knows it :S

Yes, rice milk is very thin... it shouldn't have anything floating in it though - did you shake it well?
And for the record, I love rice milk (Rice Dream) but find the shelf stable stuff a bit nasty - the refrigerated kind tastes much better.

I agree with the shaking part. I usually buy the shelf stable kind (because I can't drink the 1/2 gallon refrigerated kind before it goes bad) and I've noticed that if I don't shake it well EVERY time I go to use it, it looks a little odd in the bowl. I don't think it's bad though, especially if you've only just opened it...

Rice milk is by far my favourite, I know its strange having things floating in your food, but don't let it ruin all rice milk.
I use Rice Dream, I haven't seen anything floating in it, but I always shacked the carton for about 10 seconds. I use soy milk when I'm cooking/baking though, it just has a better consistency. Rice milk is a lot nicer in cereal since soy milk is so much thicker

I did shake it, loads. I kept trying it in between the shakings and it still looked like the rice and the water had separated lol

Just try oat milk. It will rock your world. (I drink only the vegan kind without animal vit D3 though.)
Rice milk is fine tastewise, but often tends to have baaaad oils added to it (safflower, sunflower).
People who say their favourite milk is rice milk just haven't tried Oatly yet.

I've never even heard of it! I'll be on the look out for it :)

I don't think it's made it to the American continent yet, unfortunately. It's a Swedish brand. On their website, it seems so far to be only available in Europe and a few places in Asia.

So which vitamin D is the vegan kind ?
D2 (ergocalciferol).
D3 (cholecalciferol) comes from animal sources

There are also some soy-rice-milks available. They aren't that thin as ricemilk alone.
