Hi,
I am writing to let everyone know that Jiffy banana nut muffin mix has animal fat in it. My daughter has been a vegetarian all of her life and has just started baking in the last year or so. She had been making some other Jiffy mixes and we always checked the ingredients and found vegetable shortening. Last time at the grocery store she got the banana muffin mix and we didn't check the label. (Unusual for us.) BAD idea. Tonight, she was in tears when we happened to notice the ingredients. I've never seen her cry so hard. She and I are SO angry. We trusted Jiffy...not any more.
Never forget...always read the labels. We plan to.
Happy Veggie Thanksgiving to all,

I read the ingredients of a Jiffy brand pizza crust at the store, and it had something beef in it. I can't remember the exact ingredient, I just put it down when I read beef. I think it was beef fat.

I checked their web site and it appears like they put "animal shortening" in their muffin, crust, biscuit, and pancake mixes. In the cake and brownie mixes they use vegetable shortening.

lard, lard, and more lard.
It's all over Alabama grocery stores, too.

Even the dessert mixes. I just don't buy Jiffy ever.

Hostess uses animal shortening in all their dessert foods. Twinkies, cupcakes, etc. Be careful for those. I was so upset when I found out.

Yuk! Why would it need lard?

Some people *cough*southerners*cough* like to put lard in cornbread, biscuits, pie crust and just about any other baked good.

^^ it's the sad truth

They also like to put bacon in vegetables. Mainly collards and all kinds of beans

Danged animal ingredients, lard = yuck. Is there a cornbread mix alternative you recommend? Should I just do it the old fashioned way?

I went to a restaurant and ordered the "Rabbit Plate" (seriously - that was the name) and the description was all veggies. Broccoli, corn, green beans... and a whole lot more. I took one bite of the corn and almost spit it out. Turns out under the pile of corn there was bacon. As there was under every vegetable on the plate! And I had told the guy that I was vegan [ though not in those words exactly - I usually go with vegetarian and allergic to dairy/eggs :) ] But seriously?? I was pissed - to say the least. At least they didn't use lard? Haha. Texas can really suck sometimes.

Do it the old fashioned way. Seriously it doesn't take any longer than using a mix and you'll know exactly what's in it.
