View Full Version : Grr, dodgy sandwich ingredients list.

The past two days I've bought a sandwich from the shop at my uni (made by a company in the area) and the ingredients were suitable for me to eat - I've had this sandwich for a while. Yesterday, after eating it, I had a horrible stomach ache. But I thought maybe I ate too fast, and also it went out of date the previous day (got it at a reduced price). But I bought one again today (not out of date) and when I had almost finished, I noticed some sort of 'butter' looking thing. Checked the ingredients again, no dairy listed. But I felt ill again!

I looked at the ingredients again and saw that NO type of margarine OR butter was listed, but it was definitely on that bread! According to the packet it is just bread, hummus, and veggies. Nothing else.

I've emailed the company politely asking what is going on, if it now contains butter... but it should have been listed on the packet surely? I feel annoyed even if it is still vegan (i.e. its a veg margarine) that they put something in there without listing it.

What should I say if they e-mail back and tell me that there is butter in there, that wasn't on the ingredients list? Just tell them to change it, or actually make a fuss?

It won't be butter, it'll be a margarine type of spread (more cost effective and longer shelf life). The margarine can contain dairy products or worse.

Selling inappropriately labled food is negligent and the FSA takes this seriously. More here: http://www.food.gov.uk/foodlabelling/ull/

Things should be labelled Shifu - and if they've recently changed the ingredients, then they should say so. Where in the world are you - I''m UK, and we have ingredient labelling laws!

I'd complain if I were you...in a nice way of course!

Why would anyone put butter/margarine on a hummus and veggie sandwich?

Thank you for the link MrFalafel - I'll take a look at that!

I'm in the UK too piratemoon :) I think I'll wait to hear back from the company and then, if they say that some kind of spread has been put in the sandwiches, I'll ask to make a formal complaint and request that they update the labels before any more are sold.

heidiny - I have no idea  They didn't put any butter/margarine in them before... doesn't really need it when there is hummus! All I can think of is that whoever is on the production line is putting some extra spread on the bread, maybe new staff or something, and that the company might not be aware of the mistake since if they intentionally changed the ingredients I think they would have written it on the packets.
