The big mound of food which is obviously taking the place of a turkey on this holiday table -- What is this?
I saw it on vegcooking.com, but I've searched and searched and searched and I can't find a name for it or, more importantly, a recipe!
Any ideas?

its kinda hard to see it. looks like it could be a nut loaf/roast in a pastry or tofu based shell, baked in a bowl? maybe a wellington or roulade that hasn't been rolled up.

it's a homemade tofu-turkey.

on closer inspection i'll add that i think the skin is maybe a beancurd sheet. so basically what WR said but with more rambling.

using halved oranges as bowls is pretty creative . . . and a little weird.

I clicked on the picture and it took me to a bunch of recipes. I think it is in either one of the faux turkey or meal links. I am making something similar to the "easy holiday meal" as I am just making a Tofurky, mashed potatoes and Tofurky gravy, extra Tofurky rice, veggies and desserts and maybe a vegan stuffing.
I am going to need to take extra walks next week

really? it's not something unusual to me. you can buy frozen italian sorbets and other desserts set inside orange and lemon bowls in the supermarkets here. its just like fruit salad in a hollowed out pineapple, or baking and serving rice and whatnot in a squash/pepper/beefsteak tomato/eggplant. :)

it's not really the most appetizing picture to use to entice omnivores to celebrate a veg. holiday... haha
I thought it was a coconut cake when I first looked at it

I was going to say exactly this. Costco sells them here.

I hear so much about this Costco, my aunt and uncle practically live there. Do they have enough vegan things to make membership worth it?

No. I am the queen of frugal and even with a family of four, I can find 90% of the things they stock cheaper, elsewhere. They do have everything in BIG packs, so you don't have to shop so often. Or they take forever to use up. Or they are difficult to store. A lot of people like it, they do have good stuff, but not terribly practical for a single person or small family... maybe go check it out - you can do a "test visit" I think?

I'm actually going to make her seitan "turkey" for thanksgiving.
First time preparing seitan, or even trying it.
I'm hoping it turns out well!!!

thanks for the info, TnS. maybe i will check it out b/c sometimes I have to buy things for the kids at school - a large group. . . . but you're right, it wouldn't be practical for just me.
