This is something that has been freaking me out for about 3 months now. I have been getting stray black hairs on my chin. I am 35, I feel like this is an early sign of menopause. I made an appointment with my gyn, because I am due anyway, but I am really scared. I pluck them, and they have been returning.
I did a google on it, didn't find much out. Could it be my hormones going wacky? I am scared. Lately I have no energy, no intrest in working out, which for me is odd, I am depressed and stressed, just lots of family stuff going on.
My husband and I are really trying to get pregnant, I don't need menopause. Any info would be greatly appriciated.

There's a number of things that can cause facial hair growth including stress which you say you've been experiencing lately. Have you had any other symptoms that could be an early sign of peri-menopause like hot flashes, missed periods, etc? Does early menopause run in your family? I'm glad you have an appointment with your GYN because she/he can make a better determination of what's going on, if anything.
If it makes you feel any better, even though I'm older than you are, I've been plucking a few chin hairs since my 20's.

I'm 33. My mom didn't start menopause until she was almost 60.

What's your ethnic background? I'm a hairy European on my mom's side...seriously...I have a female mustache! I've got hair everywhere. Pubic hairs grow on the inside and back of my thighs all the way down to my knees! (thankfully, it's not to the point of fur; rather, it's about 30 pubic hairs per leg. My mom always had a lot of black hairs on her chin...she finally got them all lasered off when her eyesight got too bad to do her daily plucking. I think I've managed to bypass that because she started getting them in her late 20s and I'm nearing mid-30s.

I've been getting those chin hairs since I was about 16- I just pluck them out.
I don't think it's anything to really be concerned about, unless you are finding a lot of other changes in your body too. It could just be a hormomal shift, not necessarily menopause. Have you recently gone off the pill, cause that could definitely do it?

Thank you everyone for making me feel not so abnormal.
My period is very very regular, I do not suffer from hot flashes, but I have been getting exhausted like I mentioned earlier.
I get so freaked out sometimes, my mom died when she was 49, she had ovarian cancer, she got sick when she was 46 so I tend to get overly nervous, and I really really want a baby so menopause is a very scary word to me.
I can't wait to go to my gyn, get some blood work, and see what is happening.
Thanks again!

As everyone here has said, it's something that happens as we age. A few facial hairs are pretty normal for most women, more so as they get past 30-ish. Yes, you ARE getting older no matter how much you try to fight it, and your body will start to show some signs of that, (more facial hair, possibly less energy, lots of other things) but those changes do NOT mean you're suddenly jumping into menopause. Go to the Dr. to ease your mind, it can't hurt, (especially with being tired) but worrying will only ADD to your stress and exhaustion.

I've found a few and just pull them out. I also consider myself lucky to have only found two grey hairs at the age of 25. My dad started finding them in his hair when he was in high school, and my grandmother went totally white by the time she was 30.

Off topic, but I like silver hair. I'm 31 and have not a grey hair in sight, but when I do get them, I'm embracing it!
I do get a chin hair or two also.

I'd be happy with silver, but I'm really hoping for white. While I lived in Seoul, I was getting a lot of white hair, but it's all gone now! I have my first white hair ever....I yanked it out to save it. I was quite excited about it. A year later, I came across the real first white hair that had been carefully saved in a little jewelry box. So, I have two very first white hairs ever. :D A year apart. Obviously, it's not my hair going white that is MY first sign of age...it's my failing memory! hehehehehehehe
And yeah, I'm embracing it as well. No dye for me!

the whole unwanted facial hair in women thing is really common- look around and see how many beauty salons advertise facial waxing, threading, electrolysis, lazer, etc, how often its covered in womens magazines, that whole section in the chemists thats got wax strips, depilatory creams and bleach kits for the face, epilation tools, etc. this stuff wouldn't exist if there wasn't a big enough market to support it.

Hope its not too late to add my two cents.
I don't think it's anything to seriously worry about. Believe it or not, it happens, more than ppl want to admit. I think it's mostly hereditary, but there are other situations that can bring it about e.g. stress, testosterone etc.
I think I have some other kind of deal. Remember puberty? Just like other little boys, I experienced "peach fuzz". And it's like I've got a beard or something. I'm 27 now. Lately I've been getting it waxed, but I'm thinking something is going on. I think my hair prob is a lot deeper than yours.
Hey, you might want to get tested for thyroid.

it could very well be hormonal. something like PCOS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polycystic_ovary_syndrome) would do it. blood tests can help figure these things out. :)

You can't be too safe, but I have stray black hairs on my chin as well, and they soo anyoying. My mother and grandmother have them too, so I would not worry. But again, you cant be too safe. It is better to cheak it out and learn that it is nothing, than to assume it is nothing and find out it really is something.
