Sure, humiliation of the republicans would be fun for them, yet they realize that McCain would be better for their long-term goals:

Al-Qaida-linked Web site backs McCain as president

WASHINGTON – Al-Qaida supporters suggested in a Web site message this week they would welcome a pre-election terror attack on the U.S. as a way to usher in a McCain presidency.

The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if al-Qaida wants to exhaust the United States militarily and economically, "impetuous" Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is the better choice because he is more likely to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush."...

"If al-Qaida carries out a big operation against American interests," the message said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaida. Al-Qaida then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."

and that would backfire on them. One reason people in the US want the war over is they don't feel threatened anymore, if they were successful in some sort of attack it would only piss everyone off. If we took the gloves off and fought a war instead of a police action we would end this a lot quicker too. The smartest thing al Qeada could do is wait and let the American populace grow weary. A geared up military spending program would only help our economy not weaken it...... see depression.

oh jeez John, you're amazingly deluded. al Qaeda has virtually nothing to do with the war in Iraq. Pakistan is where virtually all of them are hiding. do u believe there is an Iraq/Pakistan border like McCain?

deluded....... I don't think so, what I know since we have ousted Saddam from Iraq and taken on the role of policeman we have not heard much about al Qaeda bombing any US embassies, nor have we heard of them bombing any ships (USS Cole comes to mind), for that matter we have heard very little from al Qaeda.

I am also not delusional enough to believe that Iran, and Syria not to mention a few other Islamic nations are just sitting around twiddling their thumbs doing nothing to impede the US or help al Qaeda no matter what they say on the surface.

I am also not delusional enough to think that trade routes that have been around since civilization first started in that area of the world are not now being used to move arms and material from country to country...... it would seem you are though.

personally though I think peace is a great thing, it takes someone with the backbone and the strength to use it if necessary to ensure it...... ain't it great that there are those in the US that have sacrificed so you can remain ignorant of war.

Every time some brave soldier goes to war for the sake of "my" freedom, I end up less free and deeper in debt.

The only reason 9/11 happened is, because brave soldiers were doing duty in the Middle East on behalf of the oil magnates. If you believe these wars are to preserve anyone's liberty, you really are a deluded fool. Please don't use me as an excuse for your lack of ability to control your violent ways. Take responsibility for your own actions, before you accuse others, unjustly, of complicity.

I agree with you, it takes peace to ensure peace. Or was that your foible showing?

where exactly do you think brave soldiers were doing duty in the middle east on behalf of oil magnates?

As for the rest you might want to read some history.

This is facile. The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend.

One reason people in the US want the war over is they don't feel threatened anymore, if they were successful in some sort of attack it would only piss everyone off.

Fair enough, but this doesn't suggest that the war would be justified in either case.

The smartest thing al Qeada could do is wait and let the American populace grow weary. A geared up military spending program would only help our economy not weaken it...... see depression.

Al Qaeda wants American intervention in the Middle East--it furthers their political aims.

personally though I think peace is a great thing, it takes someone with the backbone and the strength to use it if necessary to ensure it...... ain't it great that there are those in the US that have sacrificed so you can remain ignorant of war.

America rarely enters wars to protect its citizens' freedom.

where exactly do you think brave soldiers were doing duty in the middle east on behalf of oil magnates?

Not exactly. They are fighting for America's long-term geopolitical interests, which are related to oil. The strategy has become incoherent, though, as the state needs to make it SEEM like an operation to further democracy. I would imagine that a good proportion of soldiers harbor misconceptions about the goals of those who sent them to fight.
