Vegans can just as easily encounter micoaggressions and microinequities in the school as they can in the larger society. While some schools have moved to try to incorporate a consistent vegetarian (and sometimes vegan) offering on the menu, the overall reality is that vegans are still treated like second-class citizens in most school cafeterias. Even when there is food provided for them to eat, the school experience is structured so as to reduce veganism to a personal "special dietary requirement" and not a collective political standpoint from which to mount a transformative critique of society.

I went to high school with probably about a dozen other veg*ns. A couple were ethically-motivated like me, but most were veg for religious reasons. One day they held a "picnic day" for the entire school. We were asked not to bring lunches because free food would be provided. Stupidly, I didn't bring a bagged lunch.
Despite knowing about the number of veggies, the school was TOTALLY unprepared to serve veg*ns of any stripe. I remember walking to the food table with another girl. The server got a panicked look and began rummaging around for something for us to eat.
I got a day-old, reheated plain baked potato. My friend got a bun with a single slice of American cheese on it (and nothing else) and a tiny bag of Doritos.
I think I'll always remember that!

I'm just glad none of the schools I ever went to served any food at all. We got to bring our lunches in really cool lunchboxes instead. :p
