I am desperate for ideas! My school is having a Book-a-ween on the 31st. The kids and the teachers are supposed to dress up like their favorite story book characters for a book parade. I do not want to be Harry Potter - - or anything Harry Potter-like in nature. I also don't want to spend a crap load of money (cause I don't have it) on the costume. However, I know things like this can be kind of important for the kids. Plus, since my kids are in their last year of elementary, there's not going to be much more of this in their future.

Any ideas for a good Book-a-ween costume? My kids are 10 - 13 years old (mostly 11 and 12). I'd like something kids in that age would enjoy and is recognizable with out dropping a lot of cash.

Ask them what their favorite books are (besides HP)

thinking of the books I liked when I was younger...
You could be an animal from a Redwall book
Pippi Longstocking
Something from Goosebumps
A Dr. Suess character (Like Thing1 or Thing2) or The Cat in the Hat
Mr. Frizzle from the Magic School Bus (There's a book series as well as a tv show)
Curious George
A female Willy Wonka

The Cat in the Hat would be super easy. Just wear black pants and a black shirt, buy one of those hats and paint your face. Easy, cheap, and very recognizable.

thanks for the suggestions! i kind of wanted to stay away from dr. suess and the likes because my fifth graders (though they love dr. suess) will burst into fits of eye-rolling at the possibility someone might THINK they like dr. suess. so, i was thinking more "big kiddie" books. i like the willy wonka suggestion. i'd like some more suggestions, though . . . keep them coming! :)

What about Where the Wild Things Are or Marry Poppins.

Are Roald Dahl books big in the US? They have loads of great characters that you could dress up as!

I know the Twilight series is very popular. I haven't read it so I don't know if there are any characters you can dress up as...but seeing as how it's about vampires, that might be easy to do.

Also theres the Eragon series which has tons of fantasy characters.
