So I've really gotten into bicycling earlier this year... there are so many reasons, but i originally started riding a lot because gas was soooo expensive, and everywhere i would ever need to go (except for work) is within 5 miles of my house...
I also started using my bike to get some extra cardio and break up the monotony of the elliptical (i can't run due to a knee injury two years ago, and the impact kills me after a day or two).

But anyway, i was working on my OTS this spring, and found this "propaganda" from Sheldon Brown about fixed gear bicycling (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/fixed.html).. If you don't know Sheldon and you are into bikes, you must check him out!

Anyway, I LOVE MY FIXIE!!!

anybody else out there ride fixed???

I don't think I'd be too fond of that. Coasting is the best part

I used to ride fixed when training or riding time trials (50+ years ago!). It's much better for getting into the zone.

I wouldn't fancy riding down the Llanberis Pass (http://www.greatorme.org.uk/nantperis.html) on a fixed gear though!

Thanks! I'm rocking stock everything, except the handlebars of course. It's "Bianchi DB CrMo" but I don't know if that's pure 4130 cromo or not. It's an '05 that I've used sparingly, but recently I started riding it to campus almost every day. I still haven't decided what else I want to do with it. Lots of pimped-out track bikes in Philly  and I'd like to upgrade the rims and throw slightly fatter tires on, but I don't exactly have the money to do much and if I did I'd more-likely fix my mountain/commuter bike before winter.

i hear that... bike parts are sooo expensive... i swear i can get tires for my car for the same price as some nice tires for my bike...

Hills are apparently not so good for me. :( I had worked my way up one and a day later it hurt my tailbone to twist around too much, getting up from sitting on the ground, etc. It got to be so painful moving to certain positions I checked myself out with a doc and apparently a combination of my height and persistent slouching habits have resulted in spinal scoleosis (sp???).

I dunno... just be careful on hills, fellow tall people...

I rock this conversion. A little different today, but more or less looks like the picture. I use it for commuting everywhere. The frame is a Bianchi Limited.

I was harsh into bicycles earlier this year, particularly fixies, I made a very janky fixed gear conversion, which was fun, but it needed more that I never got around to getting, because I was also having financial issues read: I was broke anyways when I moved back to live with my mom for a little bit I got tired of having to ride into the town all the time, she lives just out of town, that combined with the fact that I didn't know anyone who rode fixed kind of turned me off bicycles all together. I just started borrowing my mommy's car more my car is in the garage with a blown engine right now, haven't gotten around to fixing it yet, anyways I'm living in Ottawa right now, and didn't take my bicycle because I flew and no one I know here is into bicycles at all, but I see ppl on fixies here quite a bit, anyways I'm done with the whole bike thing for now, unless I suddenly meet someone who rides a lot I think.

I have a frame in mind for a fixie or coaster conversion.

But I'd like to find a chainguard and enclose the drivetrain for the true winter bicycle.
