So I made a discovery at one of the Thai grocers in Chicago. There's a LOT of mock products. And when I say a lot, I mean, veggie shrimp with the lines painted on to look like shrimp, veggie ham paste, vegetarian smoked salmon both in a 'fish' style and in strips like lox. They also had vegetarian gluten canned foods like chicken style. I just bought two cans of hot and sour soup that looked good.
Anyways, Has anyone else tried these? I bought the vegetarian 'tuna' it looks like a tuna steak basically. I didn't see anything like tuno, which freaked me out when I opened it. ( I admit I do eat tuna fish since it's a weakness ) but I'm on the hunt for a decent substitute at least for tuna salad and casserole.
If I had a digital I'd show the picture but since most of everything but the ingrediants were in Taiwanese, I'm guessing you defrost it first and cook it like regular?

I had the "shrimps" before in restaurants. I thought they were cute and the texture was very shrimp like although the taste was bland but maybe you could season them better than the chef did.

I have had the fish, or at least something similar, cut in strips and breaded and fried, like you would "real" fish. It was good. I happen to really like most of the Asian mock meats I've tried.

I love my local asian store. Well, except for the fact that it smells waay too fishy. Bleh!
I haven't tried any of the mock fish, but I've had the fried gluten you get in cans. One of the brands off the top of my head is Champion. I can't remember the others. They were all quite good. My omni bf likes them a lot. I also found, in the refrigerator section, Nature's Soy mock meat products. Those are decent too. Ooh, and I have found a plethora of vegetarian dumplings/potstickers that are sooooo delicious!

I had the champion brand hot and sour soup last night which was really good. And really spicy lol. I also have one of the mixed mushroom cans but I've been leary ever since I opened tuno and couldn't stomach the taste.
But I'll give the frozen tuna a try.
I love the dumplings that I've gotten at other places. I looked up the website for the frozen mock meats and apparently its a place out of new york. There was a resturaunt here that served everything for a long time but it closed down :( They had some frighteningly amazing things with some minced pork and what not.
And yeah, the fish in the back kind of scarred me and I'm not sure its entirely sanitary the way they had it but the price was right for everything else and the store was closer than the huge mega mart.

Yeah! Literally just a few steps from our house, there's a store that sells Asian mock meats. In fact, my mom says that they supply all the veggie restaurants in our metropolitan area. Some of the items that we've bought from them are mock squids, shrimps, fish, duck, meatballs, dumplings, ham, sausages, chicken... That's all I can remember for now. But they do have a wide selection. =]

There is a Vietnamese place near my house that i LOVE! It turned out that one of the co-ops at work waits tables there every once in a while. I went in to visit, and he told me to try the veggie duck b/c he thought it was awesome (he's an omni)...
it was...
The place also has veggie beef and chicken, and a few other things i'm forgetting, but point being, it is very good. In Vietnamese culture, they have a lot of days omni's don't eat meat...
point being, they have a pretty good handle on the mock market...

The only asian mock meats I've tried is various flavors of "beef jerkey". They were all delicious.

I grabbed some vegan bacon strips tonight and they are absolutely the best I have ever had. they even have a little "marbling" effect in them, and they are vegan!!
They almost have a ham-like texture, so I got a little freaked out and thought there might have been an error in translation, but I double checked and they are!
They are made by All-Vegetarian Inc, but I could not find a website to reference. I hope everyone that may have been looking for this stuff can find it!
