Do you guys know of any make-up brands that are cruelty free? I am a poor college students, so nothing too expensive. I went to Sephora to look at Smash Box products, but the lady explained that the final product is cruelty free, but that the places they get their ingredients from might not be?!? If anyone knows more about this, please feel free to explain :) Thank you guys :nana:

I don't use US make-up brands so I'm not as familiar with which companies are cruelty-free as some others on VB might be, but hopefully this list (http://shopcrueltyfree.peta2.com/index.aspx) will get you started :)

ELF, Wet N Wild, and NYC are VERY cheap and you can find them locally. My favorite brand, which is 100% vegan, is Everyday Minerals (https://www.everydayminerals.com/). You have to order it online, but it's inexpensive and they have a free kit (just gotta pay a couple bucks for shipping). The free kit comes with 3 foundation colors (you pick), a concealer, and a blush.
Just add the free sample kit to your cart (https://www.everydayminerals.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=26&Itemid=40) and drag and drop whatever you want into the kit (in the cart, on the side).

Just a note: if you mean "cruelty-free", as in vegan, then you need to check the ingredients lists (and sometimes write the company) on many of the above products.

a lot of Urban Decay (http://www.urbandecay.com/vegan.cfm) stuff is vegan (marked with a purple paw). its not incredibly cheap, but its good quality and the high pigment levels mean you only need a small amount of the product at a time.
i'd prefer to pay more for a few good products that i only need to use sparingly, than shell out the same amount of cash on a tonne of cheap eyeshadows that i need to pile on really thickly to even see, and which disapear within an hour.
urban decay make hard candy (http://www.hardcandy.com/vegan.cfm) too, which is a bit cheaper and prettier, and less punk/goth. both of these brands are available at sephora.
i think what the lady you spoke to was saying was that while a company might say that they don't test their product (like say- a mascara) that doesn't mean they don't buy ingredients that their supplier has tested, and use them to make the mascara. also, they might contain animal by-products like milk, fats, oils, etc (which are obtained cruelly).
another thing i've noticed is that some lines say they're cruelty free, but then use animal hair bristles in their brushes. unless they've got people walking quietly around the woods with a magnifying glass, looking for fallen hairs that fell out of a passing wild squirrel, badger or horse, and collecting them, that doesn't make any sense.

Clarins is vegan. You can get it at department stores. I haven't tried their make-up yet but I think I'm going to.

Yeah, that does sound suspicious?! You think a company would be more than willing to give out that info., unless it really isn't vegan and they are just trying to make money any way they can?!?

i like alima, emani and herbs of grace. they are a bit pricey for some products but they last a very very long time. alima sends samples of other products with every order and even those last for several applications. those are ordered online but shipping is nothing as they are lightweight.

theres another thread around here about ELF makeup and someone was nice enough to post a list of vegan stuff vs non vegan... how hard would it have been to just have the company do it?? seriously!

Clarins is not on the cruelty free list (http://www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au/list.html).

Yay! Very affordable. Once I figured out my foundation color, I bought the $50 kit.
My order (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d13/danakscully64/large-em-order01.jpg). I wear my Nick Nack blush everyday, I love it SO much.

I love Everyday Minerals as well. Every bit as good as Bare Escentuals and oh so much less expensive! Highly recommend trying their kits. You can get so much product and it lasts forever!

Yeah, and Bare Escentuals isn't vegan. Their brushes are made with animal hair and since they only give the "Don't test on animals" label, they could use other animal ingredients. I had a bad reaction to the BE foundation, it's really harsh.

I'm in love with Everyday Minerals. My only gripe is that I have yet to find a finisher I like as much as the one I used from BE. I've tried the soft bronze which isn't bad I just like the BE one better and a couple others but I can't remember which ones they were. I've like the soft bronze the best so far but my search continues....

You tried the Finishing Dust, right? I have that one, Start to Finish rice powder... and I think something else. My only gripe about EM is the eye shadows don't show up very dark. I use a primer and that definitely helps, but I think I like my MAC eye shadows better. MAC is definitely one of my favs, but it's pricey and they aren't a vegan line.

Mac has the BEST eyeshadow I have EVER used in my ENTIRE life but you're right, they are a bit pricey and I'll never save enough money to buy a house using that line. I did try the finishing powder but I don't think it was the rice...maybe I'll try that one next. The BE mineral veil is a bit shimmery..that's what I like about it but I haven't seen anything like that from EM.
