I have a question for those of you who are familiar with The Downed Animal and Food Safety Protection Act that is trying to be passed. The act says that sick or injured animals that can't get up would no longer allowed to be slaughtered. My question is this: what happens to the downed animals if they are not slaughtered? Do they get euthanized? Do they stay on the farm for an infinite amount of time? Are they sent to places like farm sanctuary? (doubtful)
I heard about this and I wasn't clear that aspect so any clarification would be appreciated.

The Act would mean that downed animals (animals too sick or injured to stand or walk on their own) would not end up in human food and that these animals would be immediately humanely euthanized at slaughterplants.

Here downed animals are shot on site in the head, IME it would be very inhumane to keep most of these animals alive.

Does the act specifically require that the downed animals be euthenised? As far as I know, at this point, those animals are currently just left to die in some corner. The plant doesn't want to incur the expense of calling in a vet, and the drugs to euthenise animals are not available to just anyone.
