Recently, I wrote to Bic corporation as I live approx 10 miles from its headquarters. In the email I demanded the cease of all testing on animals and to move a step further from the moratorium. Here is their reply.

Company Statement on Animal Testing

BIC is committed to providing consumers with the highest quality
products.

BIC has been working with experts in product safety testing to evaluate
reliable alternatives to animal testing in the development of new
products.

By working with product safety experts, BIC can now take advantage of
today's technological advances, which include in vitro (non-animal)
testing, computer modeling, and historical databases. These methods have
achieved the level of reliability needed to uphold BIC's rigorous
product safety requirements.

BIC's goal was to thoroughly evaluate its product safety testing and, if
possible, to utilize non-animal testing alternatives. In 1997, we
completed this evaluation and declared a worldwide moratorium on all
animal testing. While this is a significant achievement, it should be
noted that animal testing may be necessary in the future if alternatives
cannot provide sufficient assurance that a new product is safe for
consumer use.

BIC also continues to support legislation that eliminates testing on
animals, while providing non-animal testing alternatives that still
ensure the safety of consumers.

My Favorite line is "BIC also continues to support legislation that eliminates testing on animals, while providing non-animal testing alternatives that still
ensure the safety of consumers."

However they stated directly in the email it should be
noted that animal testing may be necessary in the future if alternatives
cannot provide sufficient assurance that a new product is safe for
consumer use.

Are they trying to tell us that their products are more important than a life???? I am taking this to the media in the Morn.

Metta,

Please be careful how you phrase your comments to the media. It's easy for a mainstream reporter to view an AR person as a nutjob and to paint you as such. Don't make it easy for them to disregard you. :)

BIC has been working with experts in product safety testing to evaluate reliable alternatives to animal testing in the development of new products.

I think that's exactly the same crap (amost verbatim!) that another company put in its reply to a VB member here when she wrote to them (I can't find the thread right now). Somehow these multimillion dollar companies are constantly working toward eliminating animal testing, but with all their money, they can never quite get there. How did other smaller companies that make less money, such as Avalon Organics and Jason, manage to eliminate animal testing for their products yet still manufacture products that were safe??

And yes, it's pretty hilarious that they want laws against animal testing, though they would still do testing if "necessary". So they want to help pass a law and then break it????
