View Full Version : Texas Hurricane Ike in the Texas area...

... anyone else live in the projected path?
We got a mandatory evacuation order today but I can't leave because of my hardheaded father. He has alzheimer's and is recovering from an amputation caused by his diabetes and he doesn't want to leave, so I will be staying with him. Him, all the animals and my son.
Anyone else living in this area too?

I'm not in one of the bad spots, but Dallas is going to get the leftovers of Ike. Supposed to anyway. Good luck and be safe.

Well, I didn't evacuate very far, just to higher ground in Houston. It was a huge monster of a storm, and there were a few moments there when I was pretty freaked out, I have to say. Our beautiful Armand bayou and Bay Area Park was destroyed;huge trees downed everywhere. It's so sad. I'm worried about the raccoon families and feral cats living there, but I can't get into the park to check on them. There are thousands and thousands of folks without homes, and Galveston ,which is about 45 minutes from our place took a beating. We still have millions without power. The power company is working non stop to get everything back on as quickly as possible.
It was quite an experience, and something awesome to behold.Lyazaille, hope you're OK.

Glad to hear you are okay Sally!
Hope we hear something from Lyazaille soon, but I'm sure power is probably out wherever she is and updating VBers may be far down on her to-do list.

There are still over one million without power, and some with no water. FEMA trucks come hours late and are spread thin. We've been taking ice to families with sick and elderly. It's very frustrating to see them struggle. Our mayor has called for all Texans to take every chance to help out those without power and water or shelter. We've opened our home to folks without power, but so far a cool front has kept everyone comfortable enough to stay put.
Some coastal areas are completely gone. I'm very disturbed to hear stories of horses ,cattle, and even pets left behind. There were reports of some 7,000 cattle lost. I've been trying to contact everyone I can think of to find out why the number is so high, and whether there are any type of search and rescue efforts going on.
The wildlife recovery agencies are being swamped with baby squirrels and nesting birds knocked out of trees, and sea birds and pelicans who were literally slammed against the ground by the winds. There's a lost flock of seagulls in a parking lot just a few blocks from home. I've been feeding them every morning and have noticed one who has an injured foot. He flies away every time I approach him,so I've had no luck catching him. Besides that, the only rehab person lives in an area that is closed off due to storm damage. It's a big mess guys. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

Hey I'm having connection issues w/ my internet but wanted to let everyone know we're okay.
Things could be MUCH better, but we're alive so that's enough to be thankful for!

PlaybackGuru - I don't know exactly how hard Texas City was hit...I work in EMS and we have units there now...but I honestly don't have any idea.
This was pretty big for here. I live in the DFW area and although all we got was a day's worth of rain, everyone else was hit pretty hard..
I'm glad every one here is okay and I just hope that everyone else pulled through as well.

PBG, from the news I haven't heard anything about Texas City... but that doesn't mean anything b/c I haven't heard anything about this immediate area and we got hit hard. If I hear anything I'll PM you the info.

Anonycat, sorry to hear your house is still having problems. I can say I've heard 85% or more customers have their elec restored (I guess assuming those 85% are of the people that still have houses left).
Also, wanted to share w/ you guys some pics my fiance took of the hardest hit areas, he works for Emergency Management in Chambers County, which is where most of the damage was besides in Galveston.
Q's pics (http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=53237801&albumId=2514442) hope they show up!
