I'm brand new here, from Junction City. Everyone at work thinks I'm nuts to not eat meat. And it's tough to shop here, very limited selection of organics and decent produce.

You're in JC? I was just at Club Rose a little over a week ago. I used to stay there all the time w/friends, and yeah, finding food wasn't very fun. I usually got stuck w/Taco Bell & they screwed up my order a lot. Not very veg friendly there.

Hi,
I'm tying to go Veggie, Raised in a meat eating family. So and his kids (who are with us on the weekends) are meateaters. I keep flubbing up and am hopin to find a virtual veggie buddy to help me in my journey to becoming a veggie. Looking to go Lacto-ovo right now, once I get that down, hope to go vegan. Doing this for weight, health and environment reasons. Hope to hear from someone soon! :) Oh I'm in the Newton area

I'm moving to Garden City in August.... From the San Francisco Bay Area. Not sure how close all of you will actually be to me, but I'm guessing not that close considering GC is in the middle of nowhere... :P

My apologies. GC is NOT veg friendly. It will likely be a complete shock to you, it's a rather depressing town for vegetarians, with all the feedlots and meatpacking plants.
I live three hours east for the time being, but I'm moving to Lawrence in August for school.

I am aware that GC is in the middle of beef country. I have also checked out the town extensively in our decision to move there and have found that it is not as bad as you might think, you just have to find the right places. My partner and I are not moving there because we think it's such a cool town- we are moving there because we have some great opportunities for the time being, and we'll be staying for probably 5 years and then going back to CA.
Also, I grew up in the midwest, so I doubt I'll be shocked.

Ahhh, sorry about that. I tend to quickly judge on this sort of thing because if one hasn't lived in the midwest before it can be quite a shock to some. I grew up in rural Kansas and I still am not used to the feedlots I pass by on occasion- too much sadness for me.
Larger Dillon's stores will have a pretty good selection of natural and organic products. Dillon's are owned by Kroger so they carry a similar line of products. The large store in Hutch has a huge vegetarian section (at least, compared to everywhere else) and has everything from TVP to Tofutti products to hemp milk and Vital Wheat Gluten. It's not that insanely expensive, either. One thing I have yet to find, oddly enough is non silken tofu, but I may be looking in the wrong area. Super Walmarts also have some things.
If you're ever in Wichita, there's a pretty decent amount of HFS around. The best one I've been to is Green Acres, located in Bradley Fair. It's got a ton of natural and organic products with all sorts of specialty stuff I would otherwise have to buy online. Their deli also has veg*n stuff as well. They're really good at marking what is vegan and whatnot. Other stores are Back to Nature and Whole Foods (not related to Whole Foods Market, however). The city's first all vegetarian restaurant, Zen Vegetarian Cuisine opened up a few months back. I haven't been yet, but the reviews seem positive for it.
