I just wanted to share with everyone that I completed my first 5k this past weekend at Disneyland! It was amazing and was a huge accomplishment for me... I am now considering taking my training to the next level and was looking for some advice from any runners out there on how to step up my runs to now work on running for a 10k? Or if it would be a better next step just to try to better my time for another 5k before I increase distance.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! :nana:

Props on the 5k. What was your time. Good with the 10 K's --- go for it!

Make sure to get the at least 6.1 miles (10K) at least 3-5 times a week in training. You should become very comfortable with this distance.

Way to go! I ran a 5k this past weekend too, it was my 3rd.

I generally do 5-7k on my regular runs. However, if I were trying to train for a 10k I would definitely start familiarizing myself with running that distance regularly (as slicknickns said) and I'd make sure to cross-train as well.
There's some good info on coolrunning.com (http://www.coolrunning.com/) with various training information.

Keep up the good work and keep pushing!

Congratulations! Are you local to so cal? I ran the disney half 3 years ago when they first had it and many of my club members were down there last weekend. If you saw a lot of people with bright pink hats and shirts that is my club. :)

Racing can be addicting so be careful!

Have you thought about trying a marathon? I'm running my first one this year and the training is turning out to be a lot of fun. I'm having a little problem with my diet (going vegan after being lacto-vegatarian for last 15 years) - getting tired pretty quick on long runs.

I would be more worried about shorter races because it seems like everyone is running way too fast :) Congrats on your 5K!!

Helen, have you ever eaten before while running long distances?

Good for you! I suggest trying out Hal Higdon's Spring Training program -- it's great for going from a 5K distance to a 10K distance. I don't have the link handy but it should be easy to find if you google.
