I live about 1 1/2 miles from my work and 1 from school. I want to start walking and biking to school but the problem is I get sweaty by the time I get there and feel gross. I know I'm being a total girl about this but i dont want to smell at work or school....

What do you folks who bike/walk to work or school do about this?

Any tips and tricks out there? heh

Take a small towel and change of shirt/deodorant. That's what I used to do when I was commuting 5 miles each way via bike when I was working on my degree. You just have to allow for a few extra minutes to freshen up in a restroom once you get there.

My bf and I cycle to work/uni daily. I manage by wearing light clothes (even peeling off a layer or two during the cycle, as I'm getting warmer). My bf cycles in his regular clothes, but changes into his workclothes when he arrives, so he's sorted that problem out. You can always bring an extra T-shirt with you and change.

For school, there is likely a locker room with a showers right? You could wash up when you get there.

For 1.5 miles I both walking and biking seem like good options. I would switch it up.

4 sure bring extra clothes and toiletries to freshen up.

also try taking a slower pace (leave a bit earlier of course) to keep your heart rate down so you don't sweat as much. eventually you will gain endurance and a mile bike ride will barely get you warmed up...

I walk to work daily (about a mile each way). In the summer, I just walk in tank top, carrying my jacket/blouse and I put those on in the office after I freshen up. No use to wear many layers when I'm walking but I can't go around in a tanktop at the office. :) Also, if you bike, you will probably get less sweaty (unless it's all uphill or something) because there is constant airflow when you are riding. I wish I could bike but there is no place for me to leave the bike around here that's secure enough.

You might also want to budget ten minutes or so to rest after your ride and before you clean up. Your body will continue sweating even after you stop exercising because it's still warm, your heart rate is up, etc.

Take a book to read or use the time to meditate (sheesh at first I typed "medicate") or pray.

i've got the same distance walk from my apartment to my job. seemed like the more i did it, the less i would sweat when i got to work. plus i found that i lost a couple pounds doing the 3 miles every day. also, got back into running and it was a lot easier with just that little bit of walking. I do hit up the bathroom as soon as i get in, to relax a sec before starting work and "towel off" :) but i love it and wouldn't want to live any closer now that i'm used to it.

Great advice from everyone -- definitely give yourself some extra time, and if you're feeling too tired or out of breath, go at a slower pace. I biked to work all this summer (2 miles) and at first I'd be exhausted by the time I got there, but by the end of the summer I was doing fine! Just keep walking and biking every day and you'll get into a groove.

And when you're biking please remember to wear a helmet and be aware of cars around you :)

My husband bikes quite a distance to/from work each day. Luckily, there is a shower there, so he just showers when he gets there.
