I feel so bad for the poor baby whale that is in Sydney's Harbour, But I must say I feel even worse that many people want to either just put it down, or tow it back out to sea.

Why cant they at least try to save it? Putting the whale down won't even give it a chance to live, and it seems to have fought this long so why wouldnt it still fight for its life and gain recovery? with a bit of help it could be well again.

and towing it back out to sea is just crazy. They just want it out of sight, out of mind so people dont have to think about it anymore. Same with putting it down, too much of a hassle for anyone to do anything. I wish they would at least try something. The US has had a baby whale and keot it alive. the facilities were much better equipped, but with enough willpower and want to, surely goodness could prevail with this little baby who is still fighting to stay alive???? and if it seems to have latchedonto a yacht, why not use that to our advantage, and use the yacht to feed the whal;e somehow? I dont know much in this matter with whales, but i mean surely something should be done to help?

anyone have any thoughts? Id love to hear them

Thanks

It's a very sad situation but that is nature afterall! I wonder how many of the vocal bleeding hearts out there will go home to a lamb roast or worse tonight, oh the irony.

If all the best advise is that nothing can be done for the poor beast then they should shoot it asap.

Yea they are doing blood tests today and if its relly grim the whale will be euthanised which will be so sad, but for the best so it doesnt suffer anymore i guess

I have thought abt the irony as well!!! how crazy that they are so passionate abt this animal, yet eat many others 3 times a day without giving a 2nd thought to the life that had to be given up for their meals. Its sad

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife spokesperson said that they have contacted every expert they could around the world about this and they have all said that it's not physically possible to look after the calf. It would take 11 months of suckling and it apparently it's never been done before.

Seeing as the challenges of raising the whale in captivity are enormous, they have to be practical about it and consider euthanasia rather than let the calf starve to death.

Raising a whale in captivity is more cruel than letting nature take its course. It sucks but parents often only abandon their young for a good reason.

They said they have actually raised a baby whale in captivity in USA in seaworld or something,so theyre the only ones with any experience. but it was very hard and pretty extensive, cuz they had to drain the water out of the tank after every meal, b/c the milk is very high in fat, and pretty thick. and the whales dont actually suck, but they pull the milk out with their tongues.. so the tanks get dirty and had to be drained after every feed and there were at least 30 ppl working around the clock to make sure it all went well... but yea there arent any places to do that here, or any people with the know how at the moment.

I think they are putting ''colin'' down tonight :( thats what the latest is that i have read. very sad, but its for the best. he doesnt deserve to suffer any.

To be honest, the media attention to this, although upsetting, was quite annoying. Mostly because of the drama people made out of the situation. I do feel sorry for the poor girl [nice name for a girl, Colin], but it got on my nerves, having lots of omni friends making a huge fuss out of it.

I think in the end NPWS and co made the right decision, and I am [by far] no fan of theirs. There's a group on facebook about the whale, with a few stories linked to it, if anyone's interested.

It is annoying to see the way people latch on to an animal-in-distress story like that, but I can't say too much because I can remember doing exactly the same thing when I was an omni....you care but you're just not making the connection. :-/

A bit more consistency in their compassion though would be a great thing wouldn't it :)

Yea that would be better :( I feel sad but happy. at least *she* isnt suffering anymore. But I am a bit dissappointed that no one thought to try and help/feed/nurture it somehow a bit earlier, but then maybe there was nothing that could be done here. :(

I don't really know what would have been best for the animal. Perhaps people who had a plan to rescue her should have been allowed

Capt Littingham said the group had wanted to use a force-feeding system with an electronic pump.

I hope people who felt bad about Colin support Sea Shepherd (I know Capt Watson said he gets support from Australians - I think it's one of his 2 main ports now). Because there's nothing about what the Japanese whalers do that could be termed kind for the poor whales they get their hands on. They've no doubt orphaned many, many babies.

I saw a news piece on it the other night and a guy in a boat near the whale had bought litres and litres of cow's milk in the hope he could feed it to the calf. The guy was well-meaning but it made me think of all the baby (cow) calves who were ripped away from their mothers shortly after birth, never to see them again, for the purpose of producing that milk.
But I think that fact would be lost on many people...

The problem is the media/public have an attention span of about 2 days, by Sunday they will have moved on to the Olympics, the banks, the price of petrol etc.
