I commented to my hubby earlier that I had never heard the whole song before. So, we decided to listen to it. He left the room a few minutes in b/c he had sat through the whole song several times in his life. I am now wishing for those nearly 18 minutes back. Anyone ever listen to a really, really long song (like Robert Rich or other ambient artists that have songs that go on for hours)? How far do you get into them before you want to smash your head on a wall? I am determined to find the longest song ever and see if I can make it through. I am not sure why I wish to punish myself.:stinkeye:

I don't think I've ever listened to In-a-gadda-da-vida in its entirety. I pretty much get the gist of the song after the first 5 minutes or so. I HAVE, however, listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" several times all the way through, and lived to tell the tale. :guitar:

I think those super-duper extra-long songs are great for multitasking. You can pay your bills, wash the dog, or read a long book (like War and Peace) while the music is playing.

Hey, I like In-A-Gadda-da-Vidda! I also like prog rock, in which songs tend to stretch way over the 5 minute limit (waaay over), so I don't find Iron Butterfly's song that long. Have you tried listening to Genesis' Supper's Ready? Over 23 minutes long, and not boring at all (I think, otherwise I wouldn't have bought the record).

Then again, there's no accounting for tastes. As Amy said, long songs make the perfect background for other tasks. Alternatively, try to not listen to any music you don't like - asking for your 18 minutes back is really harsh, so I'm not sure if you'd like to subject yourself to even longer songs, unless you it's a kind of music you enjoy. For example, I wouldn't suggest listening to Dream Theater's Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (42 minutes), unless you're really into them.

There are plenty of very long songs if you really want to try, though. :D

It actually wasn't that bad. I was just teasing about wanting the minutes back:) I really love all kinds of music, and I was just wanting to expose myself to something different. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence...might have to check that out.

Wow! That is quite a neat project. I've never heard of that before now. Of course, we'll never know if the goal of 1000 years is ever achieved. Pretty optimistic to think it can be handed from generation to generation of custodians to keep it going.

You are welcome! I think most can agree that the idea is more appealing than a poor drum solo from an Iron Butterfly song.

18 minutes isn't long. Check out the length of free jazz performances sometime.

No argument here Iron Maiden is one of my favorite bands, but this thread is called In-a-gadda-da-vida not Rime of the ancient mariner :whack:

Fe?

Iron (pronounced /'аɪɚn/) is a chemical element with the symbol Fe (Latin: ferrum)
and atomic number 26. Iron is a group 8 and period 4 element.

If they rust in the rain, they're not vegan.

I've never heard of the song before. I heard the full version of "Free Bird", but I'm generally not a fan of longer songs. There's really no reason a song should be longer than 7 minutes.

I guess there was no reason for Michelangelo to paint the entire sistine chapel when a portrait would do or for Mozart to write symphanys when a chicken banging on a keyboard will do

The Devil Glitch by Chris Butler clocks in at 69 minutes....Why?

An Evening of Contemporary Sitar Music by Spacemen 3 is 45 min. long.

IIRC, there's not a single sitar in the whole track either. :p
