View Full Version : What should we watch on TV?

So, we're a bit bored with our current offering on the boob tube, and IS was mentioning that it might be cool to find something that we really enjoyed, even if it were on DVD. We'd been watching STNG, but then we went on holiday, and apparently they cancelled it, only mid-way through. (wth?)
Most of the series I recalled fondly, were things that I wouldn't want to watch again, other than perhaps Northern Exposure. I missed a lot of Freaks and Geeks when it was on, so that's on my list too.
We're currently working our way through Life on Mars, which I'm enjoying, but I think the man finds it a bit flat. I'm hoping to be able to steal the latest version of The Amazing Race off of the Internet in September, but I'm not sure that's going to be IS's cup of tea, either. Lost comes back in January, but well, let's not discuss that. We loved The IT Crowd too, but it seems to be on an indefinite hiatus.
Anyway, I'd love to hear recommendations of shows, current or past that you'd recommend. My dad was raving about Dexter, but we've not tried it out yet.

I have Freaks and Geeks on my netflix list also. I saw the first episode and I'm hooked. I haven't seen Dexter either but heard great things. Weeds, Six Feet Under, and Californication are also my addictions. And of course anything by Joss Whedon..Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. I'm also hooked on Bravo's reality shows like Top Chef, Project Runway, and Kathy Griffin's my life on the D-List.

Firefly
I went to see the movie (in a cinema) 3-4 years ago. It was so bad I had to leave after only 30 minutes or so. I love sci-fi, but I'm afraid I have developed a rather particular taste.

I LOVED Dexter until that black-haired freak entered the scene.

The movie Serenity is nowhere near as good as the original tv series in my opinion. The whole movie was so grim that most of the lines that were meant to be humorous didn't come across well. But I was glad to see the Firefly crew together again and River standing knees deep in Reavers' corpses in a total Buffy-esque style.

I agree. Plus I think it helps if you watched the whole series of Firefly before seeing Serenity to understand it all a bit better.

I used to be a fan of Nip/Tuck also but I think it started sucking more and more as each season went by. Last season...OMG. I couldn't finish watching it all. Some of the episodes and the characters totally pissed me off and I thought the storylines were complete crap (as well as disturbing and offensive IMO).

You should totally re-watch Northern Exposure.
You say you were watching TNG...why not watch the DVDs? I've been getting them from Netflix and I'm about to start the 7th season. I only saw the finale once, so I'm looking forward to it. I actually came across an episode the other day I'd never seen! :)
I also like The 4400. Want to start getting the Stargate series too.

I watched many episodes of Northern Exposure recently. And I just couldn't get into it.. The characters just didn't have that much appeal to me, it was a bit boring.

I watched the Patrick Stewart episode of Extras yesterday. Brilliant! "You're not married. You don't have a girlfriend and you don't watch Star Trek? Good Lord". :D

Since you're over in England now....The Tudors!!! Television at its finest. Not completely historically accurate but great none-the-less.

Okay, I pretty a good deal of my life watching tv series. Am I lazy? Perhaps. Mostly I just love them. Here's a list of ones that I think are worth watching, some of which have been mentioned.
Deadwood - best series ever, takes a bit of getting into though.
Carnivale - amazing cinematography, shame it only went 2 seasons.
The Office - Both versions are amazingly funny.
Arrested Development - Clever and brilliant.
Queer as Folk - The American one. SUCH a good series.
Extras - hillarious.
Sex and the City - classic.
Prison Break - first two seasons are entertaining.
One Tree HIll - guilty pleasure show. It's silly and girly, but loveable.
Firefly - Fun show that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's like a cowboy Han Solo in space.
Entourage - A bit of a guys show, but funny and entertaining none the less.
Robin Hood (just for Guy of Gisborne, the sexiest man alive)
Summer Heights High - Funny Australian show with Australian humour.
OZ - Brutal, raw, but makes a big impact. I love it.
Roswell - Once again, abit silly and girly but you can't help but like it.
Sliders - A little dated now, but it's a good concept and still fun to watch.
Red Dwarf - Old show, but it NEVER stops being funny.
Black Adder - Same deal as red dwarf.
The Vicar of Dibley - Family fun show that never fails to make you laugh.
The Tudors - Historically all over the place, but it looks pretty and keeps you watching.
Dexter - Not my favourite show, but it's interesting that you end up rooting for a serial killer. Definitely a strange 'hero.'
