I have a can of Trader Joe's Cuban Style Black Beans. Most veg*n products from Trader Joes clearly say either "vegan" or "vegetarian" but these don't say anything. The ingredients are listed with no overt mention of animal products, beans, bell peppers, onions, spices, and water.

Because I said so? :p
Isn't your word VB gospel? :p
The beans seem to be vegetarian, as far as I can tell from the ingredients that the OP listed.

There are rules for what manufacturers must put on ingredients listings. It it is beans, onions, spices, and water, than that is what is in the can. If it says generic "broth" then there may be a problem. Usually they can use the mysterious "spices" to hide their recipes from competitors, but spices are not meat.

Here's a crazy idea that just might work: Ask Trader Joe's. :D

I'd ask trader joe's, but that would be far more informational and less entertaining.
I think I'll take my chances. Thanks.

*chuckle*
I've had those beans from TJ's, but it was ages ago, and I can't remember if they were labeled as veg. If the ingredients are really what you listed though, I can't see where the problem would be.

No non-vegan ingredients are listed.

I once bought a can of (kidney?) beans, store brand, and didn't notice 'til I got home and heated them that they had "natural flavors" and they tasted weird. I contacted the company -- the natural flavor was cloves. WTF?
Wasn't meat tho...

How is this even a question? I'm scared of the day when I can't be sure of whats in my food by only reading the ingredient list.

Well, as a trained chef, you have more experience in this area than the average person. :chef:

I don't think the trained chef has anything to do with it. I think it's my ability to read that allows me to know they would be vegan - err veg :naughty:
