Pitt Street, Sydney ... This place is an institution.
I've started going there once a week for lunch with a vegetarian friend and we are working our way through the menu. I work 5 minutes from there, I'm not sure why isn't taken that long. But when we've had enough we will find somewhere else to go.
What do people recommend?
I loved the crispy gluten stir fried with beans and capsicum, and every single eggplant dish I've had has been great.
I think some of the sauces can be a little underwhelming. And does anyone know why they don't use more Asian vegetables??
i havent been to chus for ages cuz when i did go once i didnt like it that much. i dunno whether it was just a bad day or whatever, but i had poor service, the serving sizes seemed a bit stingy, the atmos was a bit cold and ugly for me, and like you said about the veggies, theyre not asian! i should probably go back sometime to give it another go, but yeah, not a good first impression for me.

I'm dying to go there!!!!
I haven't been back for a long time. I'd like to go again. I did find it rather hit and miss, though. I've had some totally awesome dining experiences there and some very so-so ones. I'd go again but I'm not sure I'd recommend it as fine dining or anything.
Have you tried Purple Lotus in Chinatown? They are pretty good. I had a "combination" laksa there once that had disturbingly real chunks of what I think was supposed to be offal and offcuts that was a bit hard to swallow but apart from that most of their dishes are very good.

No I haven't! I'm also a 5 minute walk from there and I'd like to get there soon. The cost of eating out is high so I only do it once a week, but perhaps my friend and I can try that next after we've had enough of Mother Chu's.
Purple Lotus isn't cheap or great value for money. I mean, it's not really dear or fine dining or anything, but you can get similar quality food much cheaper at dozens upon dozens of other eateries in Chinatown. But it is great for variety and things being utterly guaranteed vegetarian. And it's not too bad at all - as long as you stay away from the overly realistic offal soup.
There is another vegetarian restaurant on Pitt St, not sure what it's called, it's further up towards Pitt St Mall, upstairs in a little cul de sac. They do awesome salt and pepper tofu and a pretty good yum cha, too.

What about Green Palace in Newtown? Anyone been there yet? it's very good. It's thai vegetarian. I think they are very creative, there are so many choices (though they also used alot of mock meat)
