Velvet *can* have silk in it, so it's not always vegan. As far as acrylic, it's a man-made material that's made from acrylonitrile, which is basically a toxic liquid. So, yes, it's vegan, but not very natural. Polyester and curdoroy are also vegan. There are many different man-made materials out there that are also vegan. They seem to come out with new materials all the time. Basically, avoid silk, wool, leather, angora (and any other fur) & velvet and you'll be fine. :)

Thank you so much! I'm an aspiring vegan so i was kind of *freaking out* because i just ordered a wonderful corduroy bag, and though corduroy never seemed animal-derived, as a newbie to the lifestyle, i guess i could've never known one way or the other! Thanks...now i can relax!

Curduroy refers only to the way that the fibers are woven, not to the fibers themselves, or their earthly origin. While most curduroy is cotton curduroy, I don't see any reason why cotton and polyester can't be woven together into curduroy, or why acrylic fibers, or wool, can't be made into curduroy. But it does usually refer to cotton.

Same thing for velvet. It's a weave, not a fiber. Denim -- same thing. It's usually cotton, but could be a cotton poly blend -- this is not rare, less unusual as there seems to be marketing resistance against it in some markets.
