I don't live in the city, and it seems many of us don't as well.

these restaurants are near me (I'm in Poughkeepsie)

http://www.rosendalecafe.com/
- Rosendale, Ulster County
- Vegan friendly, desserts and organic beers as well, live music
- Sit downish restaurant

http://www.karmaroad.net/
- New Paltz, Ulster County
- All vegan, mostly local, more a cafe/deli. Lots of to-go food, awesome soups and smoothies

Anyone else? :naughty:

I just posted this in the other thread, but it makes more sense here, so I'm moving it :P

This is all Albany --

A big problem around here are all the chain places. Stick to the smaller independently owned places for better veggie food. Some of the places I've eaten in Albany are...

Ichiban - I love their seaweed salad rolls. They have a couple different vegetarian "dinners" and there are a bunch of different veggie sushi choices "ala carte"

Sasos - More expensive than Ichiban, but they do some nice vegetarian noodle bowls and is good for non-sushi vegetarian Japanese stuff.

A Taste of Greece - Mmm Dolmades Gyro. Ask for it without cheese, and to replace whatever the dairy based sauce is for a nondairy based (I always get the eggplant spread instead.. awesome). They have a few different veggie gyros, including a veggie rib gyro! Their Greek Fries are great -- just french fries with herbs, but I don't often eat fried taters so it's a real treat for me. I've also had the Veggie Shish Kebobs, and it came with a side and some hummus and pita and it was really good too. There's an even bigger veggie selection if you eat dairy/eggs, but I eat a veganish diet, so those are out for me. The staff is really friendly and knowledgable about their food, and have no problem making substitutions.

Bombers Burrito Bar - I ordered some vegetarian burrito without sour cream and cheese and they said "So you want it vegan?" Score. It's not gourmet dining, but where else in the capital region can you get tofu fries?

El Mariachi - They have a LOT of vegetarian choices, and can leave off the cheese/sour cream and make them vegan BUT -- their food is premade to an extent. I can't eat onions, and EVERYTHING had onions in them and they couldn't leave them out. Annoying.

Little Anthony's Pizza - Vegan pizza (FYH cheese) with a bunch of vegan toppings like seitan and veggie meatballs and bbq ribz. I've been there twice, eaten there once, got really sick, sort of afraid to eat there again though it could have been a coincidence cause the other people who ate the pizza were fine. But you know how those things go... :P

Then there's always Honest Weight Food Co-op for a sandwich (the portabello mushroom sandwich is my favorite) soups and assorted salads (green and other veggie, pasta, and grain salads). They also have a hot bar around lunch time every day, and have fresh baked vegan baked goods daily (muffins, brownies, corn bread, scones... variety changes day to day).

Syracuse: Strong Hearts Cafe
http://www.strongheartscafe.com/
All vegan restaurant. Its fairly new. I haven't been there yet but I've read some good reviews on it. Their vegan milkshake menu looks amazing. They also use teese vegan cheese which I've been very curious about to see how it compares to vegan gourmet. They are also a green cafe.

Utica:
Tramontane Cafe
has vegan desserts, deli sandwiches, milkshakes, and lunch entrees. They are very good at veganizing whatever they can. Also have vegan daily lunch specials occasionally.

Peters Cornicoupia
health food store with a cafe inside. Cafe has vegan and vegetarian options. Pricey though. The health food store itself has begun carrying vegan sandwiches, burritos, noodles, eggrolls in their refridgerator section which are cheaper but smaller portions.

Minar
Indian restaurant that has many veg options. The owner if awesome and will veganize any dish upon request.

Phoenician
Middle eastern restaurant with vegan options. The hummus/baba ganoush are delicious. Decent falafel, grape leaves, tabouli. But the mejedra is a must!

Geisha II
Japanese restaurant with vegan/vegetarian options. Many tofu, seitan, and tempeh dishes and appetizers. Again the owner is great and will veganize anything on the menu when asked.

The tofu steak sounds delicious. So do the seitan dishes.

Also in Syracuse, on Westcott Street there is a very vegan friendly coffee house. If you get there at the right time there is also very very yummu vegan baked goods (sugar cookies, black & white cookie, etc).
I forgot the name, but will post it up asap. :)

Syra-Juice in Marshall Square Mall has tons of yummy vegan things. Their hours are funny though and I don't think very convenient.

Pita Pit on Marshall street has a good hummus and veggie wrap.

Alto-Cinco on Westcott Street has some vegan friendly options. I think its a bit better than Syra-Juice. They also had vegan brownies when I went. Wasn't a huge fan of the brownie, but it was decent.

soad- Let me know what you think of Strong Hearts if you end up going. I keep attempting to go but never make it there. Hopefully sometime this week maybe.

Sugar Pearl Espresso in Syracuse also has some yummy vegan goods and delicious vegan foods. Breakfast includes tofu scramble and pumpkin pancakes :). Its on Burnet Ave. Also Funk n' Waffles has vegan waffles (though I haven't checked that out ).

I went to Strong Hearts and it was absolutely awesome. I had a BLT and an oreo milkshake. My omni bf had waffles. He really liked the milkshake.

The name of the cafe on Westcott is Recess, btw. :)

I went there yesterday and got almost the same exact thing! I had the oreo milkshake (OMG soo good!) and the grilled teese but I added soy bacon to it and some seitan because I wanted to try their version. For the record RabidChild makes the best seitan hands down. I also got a chicken cesear salad on the side that was kick ass! The teese wasn't melted but it was still good. Tasted a lot like vegan gourmet imo. My vegan friend went with me and had the tofu omelette mcmuffin and she said it was delicious as well. She also got the chicken cesear salad.

One problem I had with the place. It was incredibly hot in there. There was no a/c, in the high 80s and since the kitchen is right near the counter it made it extra hot. We didn't stay long because of that reason. It was uncomfortable to sit there and eat when it was that warm. I want to go on pizza night but I'm definetly going to wait until it cools down. I can't imagine how bad it gets when they're cooking pizza after pizza in the heat. I feel for the guys in the kitchen/behind the counter. That must suck!

The atmosphere/decor surprised me a bit. It was smaller than I thought it would be and "upscale"? I think its because I've gotten used to going to another vegan friendly coffeehouse in my town that is very retro and hippish. Its cool though.

I've read about Recess. We actually ventured on Wescott to go to the co-op. I regret now that we didn't check out Recess. But I'll be back to check it out.

I spend a lot of time on the North Fork of Long Island, so thought I'd add to this thread... here are some of my favorite places to eat out there. None of these are entirely veg, but I've found they all have good options.

Jamesport Country Kitchen (Jamesport): Several vegetarian dishes on both their lunch and dinner menus. Vegans can get a pasta with just veggies in garlic and oil.

Bruce's Cheese Emporium (Greenport): Good for breakfast and lunch. A lot of eggy/cheesy dishes for vegans to watch out for, but the Light Weight sandwich with no cheese is vegan, if you get it on their French baguette (and quite yummy.)

La Cuvee (Greenport): Great pesto pasta, and the chef's french onion soup is awesome (she makes it with roasted vegetable stock instead of beef stock!)

A Mano (Mattituck): Awesome Italian place. Lots of pizzas and other veggie options.

North Fork Table (Southold): One of the fanciest places on the North Fork. They often don't have anything vegetarian on the printed menu, but I've always been accommodated with delicious dishes -- just ask. They can accommodate vegans as well.
