Hello all! I'm a 21 year old female, I'm 5'8 and right now I weigh about 163 pounds. I became a vegetarian at the end of January of this year and ended up gaining almost 10 pounds since then. I start cutting out dairy and egg products too a few days ago. I would love to lose some weight, ideally around 20-30 pounds. Any advice?
And has anyone had any positive results from the "Skinny Bitch" diet? I haven't read the book yet, and I've heard mixed reviews. The title and the fact it was written by two models kind of turned me off.
Thanks so much everyone!

It's not a diet. The Skinny Bitch is veganism. Work out. Eat Healthy. Pay attention to your caloric intake. Get enough nutrients, work out at least 3-4 times a week and don't eat junk. You'll lose weight. Don't drink your calories. Stick to water. If you must drink soda, drink diet. That's what I've been doing and it works for me. I go to the gym 5x a week and watch what I eat. It works! Good Luck!! Peace & Love!! Muah!! :sunny:

I personally hated the book. It does help people who want to go vegan. It's a little too strict for me though. I hated the part about not drinking coffee. I don't really see how it would make me sick.
I agree with Nickle. Eat healthy, work out, cut out soda and bad foods. You can't go wrong with that.

Well if you become dependent on multiple pots of coffee a day you can get caffine sickness... You also become addicted to it and suffer withdrawls.... If you consume it in moderation though, I don't see a problem with any "junk" food. I mean the occasional soda won't hurt you if you balence it out by having it with a healthy low cal meal. Moderate exercise is important though. I say start off with a nice brisk walk in the evenings, Maybe do some streches in the morning. Try to make simple changes like taking stairs instead of elevators, Park futher away from buildings, Etc. If you're willing to work a little harder, A local gym membership is nice. I do eliptical bikes. They focus on the muscles in your legs and thighs to tone while still giving you a great cardio exercise. I can do 6 miles on there without breaking a sweat, Where-as old fashioned treadmills wear my down after about 2.5 with very little good results. I also do some moderate weight training/streches to focus on my arms and abs. You should strart see some results with that plan in a couple weeks.

The McDougall diet is essentially a vegetarian diet.
He suggests avoiding all:
Flour products
Avocadoes
Olive Oil
Soy products (so there go your cream cheeses, vegan cookies, icecream etc)
Nuts
Until you loose the weight you need to loose. Those are all very high in fat and it is easy to gain weight when you switch to a vegan diet, because you rely so much more on carbs and veggies!
Don't worry, you can still eat all you want of
cereals
beans
vegetables
and two servings of fruit
Hope this helps!

cutting out dairy and eggs will greatly help your weight loss, just make sure you replace what you normally eat with these items with some fresh veggies instead of processed foods...

hi GreekGoddess-
In Feb 08, i weighed 166-167 (I'm 5'7) and now I'm 141-142.
I was already mostly vegan, and have been exercising for many years - but joined Weight Watchers. My main issue was eating too many calories..not knowing how much i really needed, or how much I was actually getting.. etc..
So, I basically increased Veggies & Beans, limited Fruit to no more than 2-3 pieces, limited Grains and avoided any "ground flour" products e.g. Pasta, Bread and limited my consumption of oils (I exchanged olive oil for ground flaxseeds)
I skimmed through Skinny Bitch..didn't like it mostly due to the language.
I do recommend that you read a good book on vegetarianism (whether or not it's Skinny Bitch - "Becoming Vegan" is a popular choice!!!) -- When I started out.. I was 'winging' it on my own.. which is why it took my 15 years of flip-flopping between Veg and Omni to get to where I am today LOL.
For Weight Loss, I recommend SparkPeople.com - you can see what you're eating, how many calories you're getting - it'll surprise you - I used to think I wasn't really 'eating much' but honestly.. calories add up and it was an eye-opener.
For the last 2 months, I basically have been doing SparkPeople calorie- tracking instead of counting WW points, both work, but one is free LOL. The critical issue though is staying consistent. Good Luck, I know you can do it :)
