View Full Version : trouble finding vegan margarine

Haven't bought margarine for years and was pretty disappointed to find that it's generally got some sort of animal by-products in it.
I'm having trouble finding an accessible vegan margarine. Does anyone have a brand they can recommend that's fairly accessible? (I'm in Toronto, Canada) There are no stores in my area with a vegan/veggie edge so I mean the kind of thing I'd find at one of those annoying big grocery chains.
Thanks.

Earth Balance!
Vegan and yummy, now watch it close because only the organic one of the line is vegan.

I've also had a hard time finding it at the regular grocery store, but can find Earth Balance at health food stores, etc (which is what I prefer to buy). One product I found that in my local store- with one of the smallest health food sections ever- is Smart Balance Organic Buttery Spread. It comes in a green tub.

omG Earth Balance is the yummiest margarine/spread I've ever had. In fact, it even looks like butter, not like that other yellow/orangy stuff that. Looks, and tastes like butter. Enjoy!

Just a note- only the Smart Balance Light is vegan. Regular Smart Balance has whey.

If you can get over there to stock up once in a while, The Big Carrot (http://www.thebigcarrot.ca/map.htm) is just off the chester subway, and if Whole Foods doesn't also have Earth Balance, i'll fall over in shock.
Its quite possible that big chain supermarkets in TO carry it too, i know that the Highland Farms we go to in Mississauga has it, and i've seen it in a Sobeys before too (though admittedly it wasn't one in Ontario).
Look in the natural/organic section of a big store, and you'll have more of a chance than in a smaller location.

It does? I didn't know that... I'll have to double check over at my sister's house. She has been known to buy that for the times I visit. I always buy Earth Balance, though.

I buy Earth Balance for baking and Smart Balance Lite (which says vegan right on it) for spreading. Neither are hydrogenated and I like that. I can only find SB in my grocery store though. I have to hit a health food store for EB. I'm in the states, but it seems like grocery stores everywhere are starting to catch on :)

EB! We couldn't live without it. Food, air, water, friendship, our 2 dogs, and EB!

Pretty sure. The Light kind tastes great though and is usually equally available so it's not a biggie to avoid any hidden dairy or whatever.

President's Choice (Superstore, or Loblaw's, or one of that company, whatever it is in Ontario) Lactose-Free margarine is almost vegan (no whey, no casein) - the last ingredient on the list is vitamin D3, though - which I think might be the one that comes from animal sources?
Haha, I know, "almost vegan" really isn't all that helpful - but maybe I'm wrong about the D3!

The Smart Balance ORGANIC (at least here in Texas) is vegan. Says so right on the front.
