View Full Version : Are any cosmetics really animal-friendly?

I work as a receptionist at a posh Aveda salon where all of the products, they claim, are "all-natural" and "animal-friendly". I went to the PETA website, and it did say that the company does not endorse animal testing. But they use dyes and perms there for haircolor, and I just have a hard time believing that stuff strong enough to alter the composition of your hair can really be "all-natural" and never have been tested on animals. On the other hand, I want to take advantage of my employee discount and get my hair done and buy products, etc. But I want to know that my money is not supporting testing on animals, and I need to know for sure. How can I really be sure that these claims are not just a sales ploy?

I personally don't wear any make-up.
Here's a site- it's for the Organic Make up Company.

They have a whole page dedicated to animal testing.
I really hope that this helps you!

i would think that if it says "no animal testing" then there was none, i dont think they can openly lie like that.
I dont really wear any make-up, but im pretty sure as far as hair goes the paul mitchel (sp?) line doesnt do any animal testing, but thats really all i know.

while we would like to think that companies can't blatantly lie about animal testing, they can fudge it. they can say that THEY don't test on animals, or that the final product was not tested on animals, but you need to research the companies specifically to find how true they are to the cruelty-free claims. you want to shop with a company that says not only do they not test on animals, but their suppliers don't test on animals either, and that nothing has been tested on animals in any stage of development.

This happens more often than you'd like to think. I know PETA has a compassionate consumer department. The companies/products listed there have signed agreements with PETA that they do not outsource animal testing. If you have done research, and still have questions, you can always call the main PETA number and ask for the Caring Consumer department and the girls there are great, and will answer any of your questions!!

I use mainly Urban Decay makeup. They do not test on animals and they have a whole page on their website showing what products are completely vegan.
I also do use a few things from Aveda. My understanding is that their products are not animal tested and are completely animal-free, save for the occasional bee-derived ingredient to watch out for.

I've been using mostly Aubrey Organics for a while now. Not only are they completely animal friendly (they have the 'leaping bunny' certification) but they are also organic and/or natural and contain absolutely no petrochemicals, chemical dyes, etc. you can check them out at the link. http://www.aubrey-organics.com/
i don't use much makeup, but the few makeup items i tried were good. i love the shampoos and soaps. some items sometimes contain honey, but that is about it.

A lot of pledges about animal cruelty are just that-- pledges. But if the company you're worried about has been certified by the leaping bunny organization, then their ENTIRE SUPPLY CHAIN has been audited for animal safety, from the composition of ingredients to whether the ingredients have been tested on animals.
I worked with a company called Nail-Aid (http://www.nailaidcares.com)-- they make nail treatments like strengtheners-- while they were going through certification and it was really rigorous.
There's a list of leaping bunny companies here. (http://www.leapingbunny.org/shopping.php)
