fish?

Some people have told me that vegetarians still eat fish, while others have told me that they don't... I'm just trying to understand.

fish isn't vegetarian. If you eat fish you are a pescatarian. But some pescaterians call themselves vegetarians. I figuredI should edit in that they call themselves vegetarians wrongly, confusing other people.

Fish is not vegetarian and please don't call yourself vegetarian if you eat fish.

General rule of thumb:: If you're a vegetarian, and what you're about to eat, at some point in its past, had a head.....don't eat it!!

Oh you guys are being mean to me. :(

...

E.T.A:: How about this:: If it had any type of highly evolved nervous system (Central, Peripheral, or even a few little ganglia and a nerve cord), at some point in its life...then don't eat it!! :p

It annoys me when people who eat fish call themselves vegetarians because it makes everything so much more difficult. I've been to restaurants where the fish is labelled on the menu as vegetarian.

Vegetarians don't eat animals, and fish are animals. Some people have this mindset that "meat" = "dead cow," whereas really, "meat" = "dead animals."

Fish is meat from the ocean.

I have only been a vegetarian for a week and a half, and I miss fish and pork. But all I have to do is think of their pain. I saw a DVD "Earthlings", will never forget the pigs screaming out in pain, totally traumatised me into vegetarianism, maybe vegan one day.:hamster:

Do vegans eat honey?

Not belittling the OP because s/he is probably new but, wow, we've had a lot of fish threads lately, New ones and old ones being revived.

Vegetarians don't eat pigs, lambs, dogs, fish or worms.

No, vegetarians don't eat fish.

Wanna-be vegetarians, perhaps. They're called pescetarians.

I met a guy who was riding a tricycle but he said it was a bicycle. When I go home and say what mode of transportation the guy was using should I say "tricycle" or "bicycle". I would go by the accepted definition of those modes of transportations and say "bicycle".

Same with "vegetarian". There is an accepted definition used by the vast majority of veg*ns and then there are the few people who eat fish who say they are vegetarian.

Let's put it this way: if you knew someone who was only eating lamb and called himself a vegetarian, would you call him a vegetarian?

fish?

Well fish are an animal, and they suffer, and it's still killing. If you are going to judge something's right to live based on it's intelligence, then by that logic it is okay to eat those with severe mental disabilitiies. Pescetarianism is simply not a consistent ideology.

Yeast is not a member of the animal kingdom. As far as I am aware there is no sentient life out with the animal kingdom :book:

I think when it comes to the whole "fish" angle it's down to perceived suffering.
Myself I don't eat fish but I do have a ladyfriend who is "vegetarian" who does eat fish. Her belief is that fish don't get killed in such a torturous way as a lot of land animals and certain ShellFish - that the fish suffocates so it's not such a "nasty or cruel" way to die as something like a cow or pig - also that with fish it's not an animal that is just bred to die.

To be fair though she doesn't look down her nose at other meat eaters as she knows that she could be considered a hypocrite.

Ever heard of fish farms? Cows aren't the only animals that are bred specifically for food.
