I am just newly vegan and I was wondering where I could buy deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste and lotion that is cruelty free and animal free in a normal store, that doesn't cost a huge amount because I am a broke college student? Any good suggestions?

i just did a quick search (at the top) on here for "cruelty free shampoo" and a bunch of threads popped up that might help you out.

http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/search.php?searchid=2928098

the search feature can be really handy.

there's also this site that might help out some: http://www.askuswhy.com/product_(3).htm

Target has started carrying certain cruelty-free brands like Giovanni, Kiss my Face, Alba Botanicals, and Jason's. At least the Target I go to does. They are in a different aisle than the regular shampoos, etc.

Lush has a lot of vegan products (www.lush.com). They are listed with a green V next to them. I love their Cynthia Sylvia Stout shampoo.

Another good, more widely available company is Tom's of Maine. Their toothpaste, soaps and deodorant are all great.

I agree that Target has several choices. I also found a few at Kmart. Sorry I can't remember the brand name.

Ditto on everything everyone else has suggested! Also, try Whole Foods. It's a 'normal' store, right? ;] They carry the same brands mentioned :] Rite Aid also carries Giovanni products, Tom's of Maine, and Alba, I think.

the last time i was in publix, they had a lot of those brands, too.

and don't forget to check your health food stores. i've seen some good deals on that stuff, too.

Unfortunately I live in Canada and don't have a Target, but I was perusing the drugstore today and I noticed Down Under Naturals, is that a good option? They said they don't test on animals, it's biodegradable and something else which I have forgotten.

Even Walgreen's has started selling Alba, Giovanni and a few others. That surprised me the last time I went there.

I'm in canada too and you can still find the brands everyone has mentioned, Alba, Toms, Giovanni etc, we have Whole Foods in BC and Ontario so not sure where you are...but most provinces I've lived in have thier own large, community oriented health food stores; along with the mom and pop variety of course! Oh Zellers carries most products Target does and they're super cheap there!

LUSH is a bath store with mostly hand-made products. They have a wide array of vegan shampoos, conditioners, body washes, lotions etc..

My favorite is "Veganese" shampoo with "I Love Juicy" conditioner! Mmm they smell so great! Also, Lush is reasonably priced since their products usually last a long time.

Mmmm I second the LUSH post :-) I used to use the solid shampoo Trichomania for years. Not sure why I stopped...lol

Ditto on the Jason name brand. It doesn't get soapy like other shampoos, but it has an exotic smell that is much more worthwhile. At least the particular one I used was that way.

I have to share this because I have been searching myself. Kiss My Face has vegan shampoo and conditioner AND it does not contain sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate or any parabens. Desert Organics and Millcreek Botanicals meet these requirements, but have found that Kiss My Face works best for thick, wavy hair.

Are the terms "biodegradable" "cruelty free" "all natural" and such regulated? I also am wary of the term "not tested on animals" does that mean that only the final product is not tested on animls? or does it mean that all the fifty thousand ingredients that were bought from all didferent other companies were originally not tested on animals as well? how can we be sure that when these terms are used that they mean what we want them to mean?

thanks, megan

"Cruelty free" and "all natural" don't mean a thing. "Not tested on animals" means that the final product only was not tested. You either have to do your research on the company, or look for a vegan stamp on the back.

But back to shampoo, anyone know of good vegan shampoo or hair treatments that are good for extra dry hair? I was happy with Shikai before, and I'm going back to that unless I hear of something better

Dangit I just found a brand in Walmart here in Canada the other day that was vegan.....wasn't too badly priced. They had body wash, shampoo and conditioner and they were $6 each. I'll have to check next time I"m back....I coulda sworn someone on the boards mentioned the brand awhile back, I'll have to search the threads.

I love Alba Botanicals Hawaiian shampoos and conditioners. They are about $6-$8 a bottle, so not too bad.

Oh my gosh--I never would have thought to even look at White Rain! A cheap, vegan hair product line! I haven't transitioned all of my products yet, but I was dreading the costly replacement process. I am happy to know that not all of them are going to put a serious dent in my wallet. Thank you!! :)

:D Growing up, we ALWAYS used White Rain hairspray to get the poofy bangs :) I think White Rain works for you as long as you don't color treat your hair. I noticed that I have to use extra conditioner, otherwise my hair GETS tangled. Kinda odd.
